Hi
Just a quick question. It may be a silly one so apologies in advance.
Putting together a space wolves army and before I take the plunge had a horrible feeling that the army was going to be a little one dimensional. My list building is coming up all close assault with wulfen and Thunderwolves making up most of the army. Does the codex allow for viable shooty options to go alongside/support their emense assault?
Already have an ad mech army that are great to play but have little options in varying playstyle and with so few units there is no variety. Worried the space wolves may be similar?!?
Thoughts?

Theyre still space marines, meaning they can still shoot pretty well. Load up on grey hunters and Long Fangs for some extra shooting power. And please, for the sake of all that is holy, don't just spam the usual wulfen and thunderwolves. IMO what separates SWs from the nilla Dex is the Thundercav option. Thats what they do. Other SMs have free Decurion gimmicks and access to grav everything and miracle wargear.
SWs have Thundercav and theyre very good. So your impression is mostly correct. If you play SWs, your kinda painted in a corner if you want to stay competitive. If not, build your fluffy list and enjoy.
The issue is SWs dont do anything else "better" the nilla SMs. Counter assualt is not really a game changer.
Of course YMMV.

I can't ever take so space wolves seriously with how Wolfy Wolfy their wolves are. Gameplay wise they seem just like worse marines except for their amazingly powerful thunder wolf cavalry and wulfen. Unless you really like wolves, snow and spamming the same units in all your lists id say just go codex space marines.

Thanks for your thoughts so far...
Spamming units is the last this I want to do. Eldar is my first army and can't stand it when you see wave after wave of scatterbikes... What I love about eldar though is their variety in playstyle and unit choices.
If I'm honest my heart was after chaos but have been put off by ancient models, terrible codex etc. Was waiting for something new and maybe the new supplement would help but I feel they needs complete revamp.
Was drawn to space wolves as I really like the Thunderwolves models and the idea of lots of heroic characters but in practice you can't fit that much into an 1850 pt limit. I'm constantly left feeling I need another 500 points!
A bit lost as to what todo now!

I don't think Space Wolves are as one dimensional as some of the other posters are making out. The things that I think are awesome are:
Dreadnaughts:
You have so many flavours of them. I personally like kitting one with a Blizzard Shield / Axe combo. A 3++ on a walker is awesome, with 6 s10 ap2 attacks on the charge. These things wreck face in combat and can take a hit. Unlike standard SM dreads they can also take a bit of shooting before falling down.
Blood Claws:
These guys love to throw dice in combat. On the charge they have 4 attacks each, if you get a full squad into combat that's 75 attacks! Who cares if your enemy has a 2+ if you are throwing that many dice around?
Wyrdstorm brotherhood:
Comes with some of the best psychic shooting. At base you have 2d6 s7 shots. Put in a few more rune priests and it goes up another d6 for each. Add in the helm of dutfast and you get an ignores cover rerollable shooting attack. Perfect for taking out any vehicle or MC.
There is heaps more awesome stuff that they can offer then just Wulfen and TWC.

The CSM players I've seen still tend to make the models look awesome. If you're wanting CSM and are okay with rules that aren't going to win in a competitive meta, then do it You play them for fun, not for winning tournies, but that doesn't mean you always automatically lose while playing them by any means.

I think it's worth noting that those who claim that "you have to take this in your army" are talking the uber netlists, and nearly every army has one or two lists like thatthat yeah, consist of spammin g X. space marines? same way, spam MSU marines in rhinos via a gladius battle company... or spam white scar bikes.
eldar, spam jetbikes, grey knights Spam terminator and dreadknights (ok in the case of GKs them and maybe interceptors aren't the only units in the codex that are just plain bad)
space wolves are;t a bad codex and you can do a fair bit with them.

I have eldar and I really like the variety too. I am considering wolfs but I am really kin to play the Ironwolfs formation. Tanks armed to the teeth and a potential first turn charge out of a LR! Win or lose this sounds awesome :-)

I run Space Wolves.
Somebody pointed out that the reason you see so much TWC and Wulfen is that's pretty much the only thing that makes them different to vanilla Marines, it's fair call.
But saying they're limited is just nuts - Space wolves have plenty of different competitive builds.
Iron Wolves Transports with free upgrades
Blackmanes Drop Pod spam
Iron Priest spam
Champions TWC and Iron Priests
Wulfen alpha strike
Deathpack Alpha Strike
Firehowlers/Wulfen alpha strike
Space Wolves/Skitarii allies
Space Wolves/Deathwatch allies
Space Wolves/Vanilla Marines allies
Fen Wolf Spam
Rune Priests and Long Fangs
I usually use Iron Wolves with Deathpack and Wulfen so I'm rocking Long Fangs, Blood Claws, Wulfen, Grey Hunters, TWC, Wolf Guard, Dreadnoughts, Land Speeders and Priests. Not exactly a spam list.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go. |

They also have access to all the fun toys from FW, go full mechanised with Sicaran Spam, relics and Iron Priests, perhaps a Whirlwhind FW version. Some of the best flyers, best melee, decent everything else. Whats not to like!

They have a ton of amazing units, mainly TWC and Wulfen, but everything else is a ton of fun and theres so many ways you can build your army.
They have a fair amount of shooting, but they are still a 'close combat army.'
you can build so many different lists that focus on different parts of the chapter, and if you love the lore as much as I do then its absolutely engrossing.
I went with Firehowlers, so lots of skyclaws/swiftclaws and lots of close combat, but as others have said, you can do drop pod spam, you can do vehicle spam, you can do a champions of fenris WGT list if you really love the terminator models.
Cheers,
~Mikey

A friend that i play against pretty regularly has around 15k in SW. He really try's to stay away from the TWC as much as possible.
WHat he has had a good bit of luck with recently has been dreadnoughts. SW have some of the best out there, he tends to run 7-8 drop pods per army, with 2-3 of those containing Dreads.
It can be a nasty surprise turn one, and really makes me have to adjust how i deploy and counter things turn 1.

The wulfen/TWC style armies are the end game style for SW. However you do have some other decently competitive choices at non GT levels. Blackmanes and Ironwolves are both good picks for different play styles.
As the post above me states, with the buff to all dreads, SW have pretty awesome choices!
If you 100% must win all the time and have the best of the best of the best, Wulfen and TWC are your go to. If you want to have some fun, SW have other options.

Space Wolves are an assault army despite what people will tell you.
If you truly want variety as it seems that you are..vanilla marines all day.
They do everything, except CC better than Space Wolves.
I hope you enjoy the choices you make bud!

I run all Wolf Guard Termis. +1 WS myriad of weapon loadouts. Pretty good formations. Plus Arjac and Grimmnar are beasts. Also lets not forget their dreads. They do there best in CC but between land raiders and storm fangs they can get there reliably
