Hey all,
Just bought my first Space Wolves box. Got the Start collecting box with 10 bloodclaws/wolf guard/grey hunters, 3 thunderwolf cavalry, and the wolf lord. So.. im pretty excited but, also a little frustrated. Ive done some research and came to the conclusion that i should go with the Grey Hunters and build off of them. So, i went ahead and bought some extra metagun bits to put on a couple grey hunters. Im thinking about getting a few vanilla space marines and a pack of Grey Hunters so i can mix and match.

A few questions...

How should i model my grey hunters and why? I want them to have them modeled to what they will use in gameplay.

Should i put my wolf lord on a thunderwolf? Ive read that this might be beneficial.

Any and all suggestions or information would be much appreciated...

For Russ and the Allfather!

Hey! Welcome to Dakka!

There isn't really a wrong way to build Grey Hunters per say. However, I would recommend not to go overboard with special weapons, as tempting as it is. Rather, make sure your options are legal, and you should be fine. My preferred loadouts include the extra CCW and Plasma guns in 10 man squads, if you can afford the points. I also usually don't bother paying for the Sarge, but always model a unique looking one just so there is a "leader" for the squad. On foot or in Rhinos are up to your personal preference.

Thunderwolf Lords are pretty powerful, and I would recommend using one in your list. However, I would personally get the Thunderwolf Lord kit and give him the weapons that you want, rather than changing out what you already have. Instead, keep the Lord you get in the Start Collecting box and build him on foot. TH/SS or Frost Sword/Axe and SS are popular combos on Thunderwolf Lords.

If you can't believe in yourself, believe in me! Believe in the Dakka who believes in you!

Hello,

For my Grey Hunters, I modeled 16 with the standard loadout of boltguns with bolt pistols. I then have 4 with melta and 4 with plasma guns.
This way I could have a two full 10 man squads with 2 special weapons each of my choice. Also, I made 4 pack leaders(2 with combi-meltas and 2 with combi-plasmas incase I wanted the option). I magnetized a melta bomb to the base of all WGPL incase I bought the upgrade.
This gives me variety on how I want to run them depending on who I go against.

The extra CCW, I used to buy the upgrade but eventually stopped due to not having the points and the fact they go down pretty quickly with all the high strength weapons and low AP in the current game so I try not to invest too many points in troops.

I usually put them in rhinos for added protection and movement(1-2 meltas or plasmas out the top fire points). I sometimes run the melta GH in pods to drop them on a target and pop a vehicle(I always have a melta squad whether it be WG with 5 combi-meltas, GH meltas troops or both). I like plasma for general purpose kill heavy armor targets at a range. Melta can do the same thing though but at a shorter range but plasma shoots twice at meltas range. Can't go wrong with melta but I love my plasma the most although I killed myself several times with it but worth it.

As for the Wolflord/WGBL I prefer them on a thunderwolf. The bonuses to movement, durability, and CC is too good to pass up imo. I always put SS on anything with thunderwolves for added survivability. The other weapon up to you, I like the powerfist or TH. S10 AP2 is too good. I magnetized my wolflord/WGBL.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. When you say extra CCW, does that mean putting one or two CCWs on? Would it be redundant to put two CCWs on the greyhunters? Just curious as far as getting the extra assault attack goes. So far ive put together 4 models. I made a WGPL with combimelta and powerfist... 2 guys with bolter/chainsword (one of which has wolf standard) and 1 boltpistol/chainsword . They look badass.. cant wait to paint!

Standard wargear on GH consists of a boltgun and bolt pistol like all space marines. Bolt pistols count as a CCW so if you have 2 or more CCW then you get +1 attack, therefore, purchasing a CCW(chainsword) will bring your total CCWs to 2 so you would get +1 attack.
As for modeling WYSIWYG, I usually see people model space marines with them holding the boltgun with two hands(bolt pistol, grenades, etc people know they have them standard so not necessary to model).
The only reason I model both the boltgun and bolt pistol on most my models is because the box doesn't come with many arms of the model holding the boltgun with 2 hands so the only other option is the bolt pistol with the other arm for the default loadout WYSIWYG.(If they had enough parts to where they hold the boltgun with 2 hands I would have done that).

When I see the upgrade of the extra CCW(chainsword) on GH, its modeled with a boltgun/bolt pistol in one hand and chainsword in the other. I think last edition GH use to come standard with chainswords but they took that away and make you purchase them now for 2 points each.

As for modeling 2 CCW on GH such as a bolt pistol and chainsword, should be fine since they come with boltgun and bolt pistol and the chainsword shows you bought the upgrade.
Bloodclaws have the bolt pistol and chainsword as standard wargear so usually you see them with the bolt pistol and chainsword modeled.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I doubt anyone would say anything though if you model them all with chainswords and bolt pistol/boltgun. The box doesn't come with enough boltguns with them holding it with 2 hands. Just tell the opponent that the unit either all have the chainsword upgrade or not, modelling shouldn't matter on them and chainswords look better anyways on SW.
