Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

Is there a story to how Kharn lost or chose to take off his left arm's armour?

Display of skill?

I don,t need armour?

But seems impractical if you come across a high toxic planet...

Sgt. Vanden - OOC Hey, that was your doing. I didn't choose to fly in the "Dongerprise'.

FudgeDumper - It could be that you are just so uncomfortable with the idea of your chapters primarch having his way with a docile tyranid spore cyst, that you must deny they have any feelings at all.

I think it's one of the gladiator traditions - the Rampager squads have a bare arm as well.

It makes him look crazy. I think that's pretty much it. It emphasises that he's a raving loon.

I imagine, at some point in his long and violent life, he pulled such an epic right hook on some Praetor or Chapter Master that his power armour simply splintered and disintegrated from the epicentre of the punches impact.

Then he kinda' just rolled with it Khorne style.

That's his fapping arm. It became so bulked out from that, it can't fit into armor anymore. Ten thousand years of that makes for one hell of a workout.

Brilliant!

No wonder he is so angry.

Most likely a call-back to the earlier Berzerker models which had similarly incomplete armour.

It appears to be based on the Roman murmillo-style gladiator.

With the strong gladiator theme going on in the World Eaters, the designers of the original Kharn model went to historical sources for inspiration. Murmillo gladiators, who were armed with a gladius and shield wore a sling of of upper armour that armoured one arm and left the other arm bare. They also had bare chests, but a topless CSM seems too much. The impression of a gladiator with asymmetrically armoured arms seems to be the theme they went with Kharn.

In the Horus Heresy books, it's revealed that the World Eaters would remove the left gauntlets from their armor before a battle as part of a war traditions. here is the extract...

"A terrifying war cry sounded from the World Eaters, and Loken watched as Angron led his company in a crude ritual of scarification. The warriors removed their left gauntlets and slashed their axes across their palms, smearing the blood across the faceplates of their helmets as they chanted canticles of death and bloodshed." Horus Heresy: False Gods

I always assumed that Kharn's missing armor is simply an extension of this tradition. He has just taken it to the extreme... cos he's Kharn.

Old timer here.

Kharn used to have a 2+ armour save back in old 3.5.

Lack of maintenance I'd say. That same lack of maintenance wouldn't be enough to modify regular power armor's 3+
