You always read about Earth being completely trashed. The age of strife, Long night and the unification wars (The emperor used a fair few large nuclear weapons during those...) But does anyone have an idea of how extensive the damage was to the big blue errr scorched brown pearl that we call home? Like is it still recognisable? With continents and such, or did Horus bombing the snot out of it at the end of the heresy mess everything up?

It's the largest Hive World in the IoM - no oceans or continents to see. Everything is covered in hives and the offices of different Imperial branches. So no, it is by no means recognizable from our NASA photos.

The into sequence from Fire Warrior showed Terra from orbit. Approx. 15 second mark.

I always loved this intro. It was a good game !
But yeah, Coruscant like.
In the Horus Heresy series, they talk about it a little, too.

The thing is, Terra during the Great Crusade/Heresy era was far different than it is at the end of the 41st Millennium.

About the only things (that we know of) that would be recognizable to a modern individual in 999.M41 would be the Himalayas (which are not in the same state as in M3, they've been altered somewhat underneath), and the southern polar ice cap (in what used to be Antarctica). But only because that's the Inquisition's holding on Terra. And being the H.Q. of the Inquisition, it's a forbidden region.

The Himalayas would not be really recognisable either, they are covered with the Emperor's Palace.

But yeah, Terra would be completely unrecognisable. No more oceans, forests etc. Just an endless sea of gothic architecture.

Also, if they either survived the Horus bombings and/or got rebuilt, Abnett describes "orbital plates" which I imagine to look somewhat like fragments of eggshell in orbit around Terra (and other advanced worlds- Calth almost had one), so from parts of orbit you probably cant even see the ground. So the Coruscant image is probably perfect.

Also going to be huge orbital rings to deliver the food m, water and suplies the mega planet needs, orbital plates and a mass of things around the planet.

Enormous defensive weapons on the surface and in orbit.
Its one of the most fortified planets in universe.

Hives are grim.
Its most dangerous planet in universe innown way.
