Hi guys, I've been playing D&D 3.5 with a group of friends for a year or so, and I'm currently DMing our campaign, and I love it ! But my interest for 40K came back and with it a need to play a futuristic RPG. I've been talking with my players and they seem interested to play it, me DMing it once again. But here's the thing, I'd like to build my own setting, with my players. I love the universe of 40K but I'm the only one who really knows his stuff about the game in the group, and I don't want to force them to read a load of lore about 40K, because there's just so much, it's easy to get lost as to where to start, what to read, what is canon, etc... I don't know anything about other Sci-Fi RPGs though, but I fear it's going to be the same problem: the amount of lore. I'd like to have a setting like D&D, a sandbox with room for all of us to build the setting as we please. Like "oh you want to play a cyborg, okay let's say there's these guys who build some" or "sure there's a planet out there where people are born eyeless".

Another issue for me is the gameplay system. I like the D&D D20 system and find it convenient, but at times a little bit too random. I'd like to play a more realistic approach where your character don't fail a basic task or a fight against a legless toddler because of a bad roll. I'm exagerrating about the toddler fight, but you get me I guess. I'd like fast-paced, deadly fights, so that they won't want to shoot or slice everyone they see. You can be badass all you want, eating plasma fire in the face will kill you. For the fight mechanics maybe I'll just need to boost the damage of the weapons, but a more developed fight system with limb damage and so on could be interesting to set up, I think there's a samourai-themed RPG that plays fights this way but I never looked onto it.

My players and me are all into roleplay, with the occasionnal epic and violent fight to spice things up from time to time, but we're into developing character depth and the skills of their hero.

Do you know anything that could help me ? A ruleset that could help me realize this ? Everyone on this forum is probably more experienced with RPGs than me, so please share your wisdom

Thanks for reading by the way

Well, there is a system I have read the books for called Savage Worlds, I like it quite a lot, it uses D4s-D20s, so stuff you already have, and the system reads well, and interesting, for example, you don't roll for initiative, you draw a card from a deck of cards going from Kings to Aces with Jokers letting you go at any time you want, even interrupting enemy turns, and it's more of a roleplay heavy game, again from having read it, but I am sure that you can work that out with your players. It also has the advantage of being setting neutral/generic, letting you build the races/power level/abilities and setting as a whole that you want as you go with it, but I haven't actually played it/run it unfortunately, though I have wanted to for a while. I have had stuff jotted down for a Post Apoc game for it, I should work on that again, either way, books are inexpensive, paperback rulebook is $10 US.

Shadowrun is the best game ever. It's the only thing I have ever played in which I have jumped out of a shot out van with a chainsaw to cut a flying drone in half before leveling a building with ANFO assisted by a troll, a dwarf, an elf, and a wizard.

I played in a game of Eclipse Phase, amazing universe, the game mechanics are decent, although my DM was a little kill happy, because you can transfer into a new body so easily. The other thing about it is, it's a trans human RPG, and that's something that some people have issues getting into I've found
