Im sure that this or something close has come up before, but i cant find it. So every one of the Legions have a real life counterpart. Space wolves are vikings. White Scars are Mongols World Eaters are Gladiators And Dark Angels are Knights. The list goes on and on Im just wondering what you guys think the missing two legions should be based off of. And the interesting part is that some of the legions seem to be based around their primarch, which they themselves are based off of a historically significant character. e.g. Konrad Kurze is Jack the Ripper or maybe Vlad the Impaler. And his legion is built around this theme. Corvus Corax is arguably based off of Cyrus the Great and Indiana Jones. Personally I think an Aztec or Gaelic based legion would be cool

You're right, this topic is up there with "what music fits each faction best" and "is X actually ok to use as Y" in how often they're discussed, but actually, no, the Legions don't all have real life counterparts.
They definitely have historical influences, and some fit a single historical trope better than others, but they're not strictly 1:1 always.
There's an interview, with Jes Goodwin IIRC, where this is stated explicitly, i.e. they borrowed heavily, but not exclusively, for each Legion.
So there's no real limit other than one's own knowledge of history and imagination as to what the missing two could be derived from.

My guess is Aztecs and ancient China.

Yeah, I mean some are obvious (Ultras = Romans, etc). But some like Alpha Legion or even Sons of Horus don't have a real equivalent, they have a tactical trope (sneakiness, spearhead assaults) but not a historical counterpart.

True but it must be stated that the legions that are a little ambiguous seem to barrow very similar themes from various cultures, historical eras, etc For instance the Death Guard seem to barrow themes from sparta (honor and endurance). But they seem to barrow those same themes as they were understood from what appears to be imperial Germany (WW1)

Actually Konrad Kurze is based off of Col. Kurtz from Apocalypse Now. He even gets killed by the assassin M'Shen (Martin Sheen). Hell, his final monologue is almost the same as from the movie, heheh.

If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.
or Assault Terminators 3xTH/SS, 2xLCs
For the love of God, GW, get rid of reroll mechanics. ALL OF THEM! |
