Hey dakka, I come to the larger thread instead of craposting on AoS and 40k for once!
I was actually wondering about Kingdom Death: Monster.
The miniatures are amazing, and I adore the setting and motif.
I have heard amazing things about the game and I was wondering if anyone on this forum could guide me a bit more.
How do the mini's go together?
How is the build quality?
Does the game play as well as I have heard?
Most of all, how much does the base game actually cost? I am on their website now and I can't find a price as it is sold out.
Thank you!
~Mikey

How do the mini's go together?
They build really well, but there are no official instructions and some of them could do with some (phoenix i'm looking at you), but nothing an experienced modeller should worry about
How is the build quality?
Again really good, but dry fitting and a bit of though are needed as some parts will only fit before you fit other ones (eg the central branch of the lonely tree can't be fitted if you've build the trunk totally, you've got to add it half way through
Does the game play as well as I have heard?
Yes if you can let go of your attatchment to individual survivors (they'll die from the most trivial annoying things, or a simple roll on a table), what's important is your settlement.
Most of all, how much does the base game actually cost? I am on their website now and I can't find a price as it is sold out.
It was $400 for the game (and it was selling well at that) at the end of the day (if you didn't get in on the KS or one of the black Friday etc sales), The is going to be a new KS to fund a reprint in November, but what the cost will be and what will be involved we don't know yet
The expansions ranged from about $60 to $150 and while I like them all do vary in terms of how much they add gameplay wise (the lonely tree is a fun model but probably not worth what it adds to the game unless your hooked, boardgame geek is probably worth looking at for their opinion of which of them add most)
Thank you!

- The minis fit together very well (as hard plastic kits do).
As has been stated, there are no official instructions, but there are a few unofficial ones (Vibrant Lantern is a good resource).
Most of the pieces are large enough that you can recognize what they are and where they go without a guide. It is best if you do some dry fitting and consider what the order of operations should be before you throw down the glue.
On some of them, there are seems that can be visible in the end. I find the best filler for these is gloss varnish (much faster than trying to fill it with green stuff, less sloppy than liquid green stuff).
- The game is fantastic, and I really haven't played anything else like it.
You have an ongoing little camp of survivors that you follow, while sending groups out to hunt monsters (or deal with the monsters that hunt you).
Frequently, you are faced with choices that alter the course and culture of your settlement (like whether to bury your dead or eat them, or whether to develop writing or music).
Actual battles are epic- each monster is like fighting a major boss fight from a dungeon crawler. And all of them have unique personalities- no two monsters act the same.
The various events will give you insights into the setting one small piece at a time as you explore.
One thing to be noted- the amount of content in the game is staggering. With a lot of games, once I've finished the campaign, I feel like I'm done with the game. With this one, I feel like there are tons of other things I could do still (and so much more if you get some of the expansions).
- The core game costs $400. Yep, it is a big buy in. Most of the expansions are $60. A few with larger minis are $75, or $100 while the biggest one is $150 (the Dragon King).
.
It is actually hard to fit more than three or four expansions into one campaign. They all add quite a bit of content, and even adding one can change things really fundamentally.

The game is a combination RPG/ Tabletop game that is cooperative, and interactive.
They fit together, but this particular game is not for beginning modelers, it takes a little experience and putty, as well as some thought for the survivors.
The game is along the lines of a interactive choose your own adventure book, and the survivors use the ... raw material, from encounters and their settlement to build on your initial survivors. Thereby, you end up evolving miniatures and modeling up equipment, armor sets, and weapons to progressively equipped and experienced survivors.
- You start out with a lantern, a shard of floor that looks like a chipped face, and a cloth to cover up with. You either kill or be killed with your mates, and gather up some scrap from the monster that was just killed, then your group go back to the settlement, and depending on your settlement, evolve the equipment, whereby then you model yourself up a evolved survivor with the particular armor, weapons, and equipment load out. You have lots of cannon fodder, but you have to be careful not to throw them away on trivial moves, silly injuries, and deaths ( which are frequent). They are one of your most important resources.
The game progresses with the rulebook, which is as hard core a choose your own adventure book that you will ever read, and you and your teams will evolve and develop both the survivors and settlements with interplay between yourselves, the book, and the adversaries in the game.
figures are around 32-33 mm's straight up for the survivors and push upwards to large scale, as in GW sized dragon/ giant monster.
I had beef with the initial survivors, and wanted more, but not at 100.00 a team.
Miniatures are high quality resin or plastic, depending on what ones you purchase or get. The sprues are Tamiya level detailed and delicate. They go together with a good glue, ( I use zap a gap) that you use for model kits, and the level of care and production is as elaborate as you want to get. I've seen some just base coated, dry brushed, and table top ready, and I've seen others in highly detailed paint schemes.
As works of art, they make Hieronymous Bosch ,Van Gogh , and Picasso jealous.
The game is fluid, and unforgiving. You either live or die. Not as hard core as Cthulhu, but pretty close. Its one of those games where if you are smart, skilled and lucky, you thin out your herd quickly, and are going to end up consistently modeling, building, or theory hammering your teams out with the load outs and bits.
You are also going to be shelling out your lunch money, paper route money, and your tooth fairy money, in short, the game is pretty expensive, I recommend that you would do well to go second hand market on trying to get them, unless it is something particularly rare, or available from the website

alrighty, the $400 price tag sorta invalidates it for me currently, I introduced it to my brother and a few mates at the LGS today and they seemed interested but not pitch-in-their-money interested (sadly.) I might consider cutting down on the $$$ spent on other wargames and the such and maybe save up over time but Its just so expensive for me currently :(
But thank you for your help! I appreciate it!

The game is currently unavailable at reasonable prices (ebay sellers set the price well into unaffordable territory).
However, Adam Poots has announced a 2nd kickstarter to fund the reprints of the game. It will start on Black Friday (so set your wallet for November).
Right now, we do not know what will be included in the kickstarter- speculation includes a new base game with a more reasonable price tag (since a good number of the recent resin minis would cast well in PVC).
But we really don't know what's going to happen.

If that is true, gather up the funding and get in on the KS. I ended up getting the expansions, game and all the trimmings for a reasonable 780.00, when retail they are over 2 grand.
BTW, where is information on the new KS? I'd like to look in on this one. If it is as good a deal as the last one, I might have to get a few people together and group buy in on it. Amazing deal, amazing product.

There's no solid info on it yet except for the intended Black Friday start date from the most recent KD newsletter
everything else is speculation based on stuff we've seen plastic test sprues pop up (unauthorised) on ebay, expansions Adam has mentioned working on etc

I hoped he would do something like this... plus if it's just collecting money for reprints and newer models, the reprints should only take a few months to get after the Kick starter closes, since all the work is done
That is why I have stayed away from the game... looks great but everyone that has it acts like its gold and if its painted... who is going to pay $1200 for a board game...
but people know how supply and demand goes, so anything that is out of print even for a short while goes crazy... example the game Deception:Murder in Hong Kong was out of stock just a few months ago..
it regularly sales for $39.99 but for those few months people were asking $60 / $75 for it...

I guess this is an example of "If a company can get away with selling it at this price, they will" (as if GW wasn't enough of an example)
Not a bad thing, as that is how supply and demand works, I have just seen it a lot in TTWG and I think that is very intriguing!

Given production costs and that this is a small print run operation, it's actually pretty reasonable. I mean, not cheap, but as a point of reference, your average KD set comes with around 2 sprues the size of GW's squad ones/malifaux's crews, 100+ cards, and a thoroughly illustrated booklet, for around $60. Some are definitely worse deals and are on the minimal side regarding models, but others are pretty extensive.

For the price on the KS, the game was a steal. MSRP... not so much. the add ons and expansions are what made the difference.
