Hello everyone !

I have read many years ago about a space marine chapter, a very special one. If my memory is good, they had the purpose of being the "teachers" to new space marine chapters, giving some of their men and stuff during the first years/decade of the chapter, supervising it until the new chapter can fully operate alone.

Does this ring a bell to anyone ?

Thanks !

You might be thinking of the Mentors (or Mentor Legion as they're sometimes called).

According to their fluff they don't fight wars on their own, they lend out squads to support other Imperial forces that sometimes means even Space Marines. Their purpose is to learn as much as possible about the fusion between science, war and military technology. Lending out squads lets them recover knowledge from the forces they support and their knowledge if often very helpful for commanders faced with unusual situations.

That does sound like the Mentors.

Shame they got retconned.

My favourite space marine chapter (well the old Mentor Legion, not so much the newer Mentors version).

Very cool story and background. They essentially act as our modern Delta Force ---- small training teams and a test bed for the development of tactics/equipment/weaponry.

Mysterious "who knows" chapter base, and their chapter master has the ultimate say in whether new technology is accepted into Imperium use (or perhaps just space marine use?). Had personally met with the Emperor or some such as well.

Back in RT days they had a very cool targeting web system for use with their boltguns. Essentially each additional boltgun hit would boost the strength of the original shot and add a -1 save modifier. So if a squad of five guys shot at a tank, and say...four of the guys hit - the resulting attack would have been Strength 7 with a -4 save modifier etc.

Starts on page 26 (the original fluff/icons/heraldry)
