Alright, so for the most part, I have my Steel Legion scheme down. However I cannot seem to get the basing right. The official GW base has a custom rocky texture so I cant tell if they used actual rock or just really gritty sand.

Also does anyone have advice on painting and basing the heavy weapon squads? I feel like it is hard to paint and base multiple models on the same base and have them fit properly.

TOO MUCH CHAOS!!!

Here is quick couple pics to show how I based up my Tallarn heavy weapon teams. Found it had enough room on base.

I pinned my models to the large base and removed the individual bases though, that helped a lot.

Also, these are the Missile Launcher teams I'm working on atm.

Heavy weapons squads on the large bases are easy. Just arrange the models how you want them before you glue them down and you'll do just fine. They're mostly made to fit on the big base together anywho.

As for the basing, just get some of the basing paints GW just put out, drybrush and wash those after they dry, and you'll be good. Alternately, do what I do and get basing grit, glue it down with PVA glue, and then paint and drybrush the basing after you prime the model. Basing's the easiest part of a miniature usually.

Completely! They're the frames for the art, so to speak. Here's some of my Valhallan heavy weapons teams:
