Following an utter caning at Apoc for my Tyranids I;ve started to actually do something with the horde of unpainted CSM and daemon models lurking in the back room...

Some odds and sods, first up, the baddies from Dark Vengeance

Cultists, as with the whole lot currently the bases just painted black for neatness, not yet decided how to base them, thinking and ash waste grey texture.

Few more cultists, went with a red/purple scheme as I like red and it fits with the marines who we will come to shortly, the purple also fits in with the daemons who we will see later, plus I like purple and haven't really used it on anything as yet.

Pretty generic rent a mob really, base colours, sepia wash then a bit of a highlight and done.

Chosen of Chaos, the bling the army is going for starts to become obvious, red/gold and white as a scheme here. The red being Tamiya clear red over the airbrushed gold, seems to work ok in small areas applied by brush

As as yet unnamed chaos lord, more bling, and showing the green I'm using for plasma with these guys, leaving skulls that are part of the armour in gold to look like they are actually part of it and not just a random skull thats got stuck.

character model, intending to use this dude as a Dark Apostle, again nice and glossy, shows the metallic red to nice effect.

Briefly away from Dark Vengeance to show the first chaos space marine unit, 13 of them, loaded for close up work, the slightly more simple armour shows the red (three layers of it!) nicely and also the model air gold, applied over a mix of gold and burnt umber brown, highlighted with a bit of aluminium added to the mix.

We don't do walking, the red shows off its glossy nature here, also brushed on, which on reflection was a mistake and future vehicles will be painted in sections before assembly is completed to allow the red to go on via the airbrush.

Back with Dark Vengeance for the hell brute model, combination of the armour colours and a rich purple, made via the hexes purple cut with white, highlighted with more white added then a final white dry brush then the VMC violet ink over the lot at a glaze. Again shows the glossy effect of the red nicely.

Chaos spawn, utterly nuts model but great fun to make, first of two, totally the purple with the eyes in black, very simple but it works.

Not a bad start really, pretty simple to paint.

Obviously unfinished, they need a gloss varnish to allow a dark brown oil wash then something to kill the shine, plus a bit of dusty weathering on the legs. Not planning any markings though.

You have a very nice looking warband coming along, leopard. The CSM red is fantastic. I may have to grab some Tamiya paint now. I look forward to seeing more!

Then suddenly I saw it. With only a slight churning to mark its rise to the surface, the thing slid into view above the dark waters. Vast, Polyphemus-like, and loathsome, it darted like a stupendous monster of nightmares to the monolith, about which it flung its gigantic scaly arms, the while it bowed its hideous head and gave vent to certain measured sounds. I think I went mad then.

My thanks, that red is really the genesis for the army, bought it for blood effects on black orcs, sprayed a car gold then airbrushed this and was sold.

Bit of a pain the brush on, it's ok for stuff the size of a marine but the rhino needs a fair bit of weathering to hide the patchy nature. Next one will be airbrushed.

Next up are some possessed and a daemon prince, will try to do some WIP shots

Few more updates.

Second spawn, also the first one based reasonably completely, also added a further highlight on the tips of the claws and some of the upper surfaces.

Daemon Prince, had some fun painting this one, base is very much in progress, may do a further highlight on the wings.

Possessed, bases are still wet here, this is one of the GW texture paints which are 'so so' but easier than painting sand.

Raptors, again nice models, bit like flying chosen in terms of details, bases have a fair bit more work to do.

All good fun, technically game legal now though unlikely to be very effective until a few more bits are added.

That purple is ace. It goes very well with your red, which I am still drooling over. Keep up the great work!

Update!

A further update, firstly the Raptors are finished, well bar weathering but thats not going to be done for a while, I like the shiny look

A couple of close ups

Squad Leader

Note the pink marine helmet, really like those colours, pure coincidence that Wifyboo is looking at marines in pink..

Terminator armoured sorcerer

An old metal Ahriman

Thousand Sons sorcerer

A very old chaos sorcerer model, love him, backpack fell off shortly before taking the picture

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Aware this lot are pretty basic, but currently somewhat pushed for time - have been aiming at "usable" such that I can add details later as and when.

They won't win any awards, but hopefully won't win any spoons either

You're making some great progress! (I only have a few cultists painted so far; building stuff is too much fun) That powerfist raptor looks like he's about to ground pound, and then Hulk smash anyone that is still standing. The pink is quite nice. And it's always great to have the missus interested in 40k! Looking forward to your next update.

The only thing I would say is that it's all looking very flat. I'd heartily recommend a wash of something like gloss Agrax Earthshade over all the red and brass.

Totally agree, plan is an oil pinwash at some point, plus a bit of weathering to match the bases.

There is a nice gradient to the colours under it all that doesn't show up too well but nothing like what a wash will do in adding depth to individual features.

Just needs a bit of experimentation, was thinking near black but I think you have a point on the earthshade colour.

Will experiment!

Following Crispy78's comments on a wash I had a go at the Raptors, group pic

Gloss varnish then once dried a black oil wash all over except the green areas.

Boss dude, the shoulder pad looks a lot less flat now

Ditto the power fist and even the pink marine got in on the act

Came out nicely, though needs to cure then a fine brush edge highlight of the electrum colour on the gold to take it up a notch I think but has added a bit of much needed depth, now just need to add the height.
