A secret Nazi military base in the Arctic has been discovered by Russian scientists.

The site – located on the island of Alexandra Land 1,000km from the North Pole 0150 was constructed in 1942, a year after Adolf Hitler invaded Russia.

It was codenamed “Schatzgraber” or “Treasure Hunter” by the Germans and was primarily used as a tactical weather station.

The base was abandoned when the scientists stationed there were poisoned by polar bear meat in 1944 and had to be rescued by a German U-boat.

It has been rediscovered 72 years later and more than 500 objects have been found, including a batch of well preserved documents, the Daily Mail reported.

The ruins of bunkers, rusted bullets and other relics dating from the Second World War have been discovered at the site, many of which remain in a good condition having been preserved by the cold weather.

The island was vital during the Second World War as the meterological reports it produced were essential for planning the movement of troops, submarines and ships.

The name given to the base has led some to believe it may have had another secret mission – with some specialists speculating that it might have been used for the pursuit of ancient relics.

Alexandra Land was a disputed territory for a number of years but is now part of the Russian Federation.

Russia is thought to be looking to build its own permanent military base there today.

...It seems the world gets less realistic by the day at times eh ?

So....anyway guess which plucky group of people gets to go and investigate.

There was a previous team but we seem to have lost contact with them -- probably a technical issue. There also appears to be a bit of a -- excuse the pun -- stormfront moving in as well so you'll be on your own for a while. But what could possibly go wrong eh......

Suddenly, everything makes sense. Trump running for the White House, the EU weakened by BREXIT, and Disney buying Star Wars from Lucas.

It was all part of a Nazi plan to weaken, divide, and demoralize the world, leaving up ripe to be invaded by Nazi Zombie Terminator Polar Bears, which also cause climate change and are antibiotic resistant!

We;re doooomed!

On a serious note, this is a very interesting story.

If I were the Russians, I'd be wary of Norwegian helicopters chasing dogs into the base.

I thought this sounded familiar, yup an old article. :(

I actually read it this time though... Though my old thought about it been an overblown article about just another weather station were well founded.

There is a legend that the German submarines operated all around the northern route, using secret bases, which were built in the 30s, when the Germans cooperated with the Soviet Union. In the 80s there were many people who "found" the base. But then it turned out that they had found the captured and moved barrels and cans with a swastika, which was used after by explorers after war.
About found meteo station - there were no laboratories or bunkers. Only the small house and an improvised landing strip. But the evacuation of the base could be the basis for a fascinating film. At first the Germans were poisoned by parasites of human meat and became madness. Sent a man who had to jump with a parachute, but he decided to land his plane. Landing turned to accident because of boulders hidden under the snow. Second aircraft was sent, but it could not land. then another plane dropped a spare tire to repair damages. Only after that the German pilot managed to evacuate the plane filled with zombies. They attacked him and plane landed on some secret Ahnenerbee laboratory He used time machine to banish them, but now they returned

So, they were trying to tame and control the drop bears?

Nonono, POLAR drop bears. Which are way worse than the Aussie kind, since theyve evolved the power of flight. *serious nod*

Don't worry. Russian researchers have announced that the base is completely normal, that there is absolutely nothing suspicious there and that all "false WW2 myths" have been dispelled.

All we'd get is some mid-budget action film... Though if it turns out to be "Alien vs Predator - vs The Thing" I'd pay good money to watch it.
