"They were in solid square blocks standing out sharply against the skyline and you couldn’t help hitting them. We lay in our trenches with not a sound nor sign. They crept nearer and nearer and then our officers gave the word. The Germans seemed to stagger like a drunk man hit between the eyes, after which they made a run for it, shouting some outlandish cry that we couldn’t make out. Poor devils of infantry, they advanced in companies of quite 150 men and files 5 deep. The first company was simply blasted away to heavens by our volley at 700 yards and in their insane formation, every bullet was almost sure to find two billets. They had absolutely no chance".

My aim was to create an Imperial Guard Army Themed on the BEF (British Expeditionary Force) and French Army that went to war in August, 1914.

Converting using GW Bitz, my intention was to articulate a look and feel to the army which on the one hand looks accurate and represents the troops sent both to Europe and the colonies in Africa and the Middle East, and on the other provide a flavour that is recognizable in the 41st Millennium.

THIN YOUR PAINTS

Ahem. They look ok, and the colour scheme does work, but why redcoats? The BEF looked something like this: http://ww2today.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/norfolks_jan_40-600x342.jpg and were all dressed in khaki. Credit where it's due though, those cavalry officers look gorgeous.

That is correct, I just like the redcoat theme for the officers

The French are Death Korps of Krieg, which are passengers for the Gorgon Carriers.

The British troops are cadian guardsman but I've used Cadian Officer Heads and backpacks from the heavy weapon teams.

The Cavalry are Empire horses and some of the arms are from the Tempestus Scions pack. Helmets for the cavalry and redcoats are from the Empire Outriders box.

The British Artillery uses wheels from Orc vehicles and two mortars from the Guard heavy weapons team box, with the shields that comes with it as well.

Hope this helps.

Nice army on the table. I like a little variety in units in an army and you accomplished this. I also have a fetish for rough riders... Thanks for sharing! (I did my graduate work on WWI as a note, so also have a soft spot for armies themed there, alas being me I have to point out the BEF was nearly wiped out in the first month of the war (which also happens to my guard infantry most games...)...poor devils themselves...which of course led to the tragedy of the Pals battalions at the Somme...lessons learned too slowly in that war.)
Thanks again!

Keeping the hobby side alive!

I never forget the Dakka unit scale is binary: Units are either OP or Garbage.

Still, being able to fire their rifles at such a rate that the Germans beleived that machine guns had been set up is quite a feat. One that the guards can mimic with their orders...

You're welcome!

I also did my dissertation on the BEF

The basing is bland and youve got gaps in the bases .The gas
masked figure poses are very uninspired, the WW1 soft caps look excellent though

Anything related to WW1 is right up my street! So very cool man

I think the ones with blue coats and red cuffs look very much like the great war time period

If you like, check out www.janovich.nl I've made an animated shortfilm about ww1 last year.

I like the thought process behind the models. The painting could use some work, but it's painted...so that's a plus in my book! I will say that the open-slotta bases desperately need to be filled. That's very jarring when looking at the minis.

Yeah the theme of the army is great, and the paint job looks cool, but little niggles like open slotta bases just makes it look a bit half arsed. It's your army obviously so you can base it however the hell you like it, but it wouldn't take much to push a bit of putty/ green stuff in there and paint over it.
