My last time I played 40K was when the 6th edition just came out! Now I see that we are now in the 7th and so many new armies and rules have been added. I have some questions that I'm hoping that some of you can help me with before I spend a fortune AGAIN! Question 1) With all the negativity about the 7th edition, is it worth getting back into? Question 2) I want a good fast attack army, but want to stick with only one army. Which of the 4 armies would make the best according to 7th edition? ( Necrons - Space Marine (Any) - Dark Eldar - Eldar ) Question 3) Assuming you helped me choose one of the 4, what is a good 1850 list of that army. Looking forward to getting back into this! Thank you, Jon

Space marines and Eldar are both top tyre armies and don't need any allies (though both have great battle brothers)

1 - I don't think anybody can answer that question for you. For each person that hates 7th there's plenty of other people that still think it's a fun game. I think the best thing to do is to look at the rulebook and see what you think. Try and ignore all the negative stuff you see on the web. Maybe take a look at ebay for a secondhand copy of the mini rulebook (or compact or condensed or whatever it's called) as there's constant rumors about 8th coming out soon - I don't know how much you wanna blow a hundo on the big book if 8th comes out in the next year or less. Why do you want to get back into it?
2 - I think picking your army, if you're looking for a fast army, look at which units for each of the armies you're interested in that are fast, and see which army has the most interesting models. Think about which models you're going to want to paint and play with. I think that if you're planning on only sticking with one army, you should really make sure it's something that you're going to want to paint, look at, and play with for the long term. In particular, Necrons and Eldar each have a strong codex right now. Where are you at with what you want to do with the army? Something fluffy or something super competitive?

Negativity is just what a lot of gamers emit. It's...a thing. it wouldn't be a reason I would use for making ANY decisions.
FAST and hard hitting armies come in a lot of varieties now. I tabled an Eldar list that was basically a whole bunch of douchy Forge World Shenanigan BS today and it hit hard when it wasn't busy dying. So I mean I think a little more detail on what kind of hitting you're talking about would help us give advice.
Eldar are mean though and are the hardest hitting at the moment. A WraithKnight, 20 Jetbikes with Scatterlasers, a D-Cannon battery to protect the bikes, and an Aspect host of Warp Spiders is definitely a powerhouse army though. Can't go wrong with those.

No, sometimes negativity is entirely justified and listening to it will save you money. In the case of 40k most of that negativity is justified. Automatically Appended Next Post: JonSpencer14 wrote:Question 1) With all the negativity about the 7th edition, is it worth getting back into?
Not really. The rules are even more of a bloated mess than they were in 6th, and balance is also much worse. If you aren't devoted enough to the idea of playing 40k again that you wouldn't even think of asking "is it worth it" you're not going to have much fun, and you should spend your time and money on a better game (or even something else entirely). 7th edition is a miserable slog of a game that you put up with because you love the fluff and models, not a thing worth doing for its own sake.
Question 2) I want a good fast attack army, but want to stick with only one army. Which of the 4 armies would make the best according to 7th edition?
( Necrons - Space Marine (Any) - Dark Eldar - Eldar )
Eldar are blatantly overpowered and fast, C: SM have some bike/cavalry death star lists that are fast and overpowered. Necrons aren't fast at all, and DE technically still exist I think?
Question 3) Assuming you helped me choose one of the 4, what is a good 1850 list of that army.
Wraithknights with D-weapons and jetbikes with scatter lasers. Take whatever ratio of the two you feel like, win lots of games.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices. |

To all, Thank you for your response and feedback. I think that I will order the rulebook first and do a little more research using the internet and Army Builder to determine what type of units I will build. Due to everyone's feedback it's looking like Eldar is on the short list along with possible space marines! Hell may use the Eldar for the fast and Marines for troops, scouts or terminators! IDK yet! lol You guys have given me a lot to think about, but I think that I'm in! To "toothgrinder" The reason I wanted to get back into the Hobby is....I just got out of a 5 year relationship with my girlfriend "Fiance" and didn't have time or the money between her, her 4 kids and my son. But now, I have a full 5 bedroom house that is begging for a 40K room and I now have the time and money.

Having a look through the rule book is a good idea, but it's also worth watching a few battle reports on youtube to see what you make of it and how it works on the tabletop. Whilst it's very true that 7th has it's problems, don't be fooled by some of the bitter sourpusses around here that it's unplayable, it's very much playable and if you stay away from the tournement level gaming it's very much possible to use almost any codex and get a decent game out of it (though admitedly you have to work harder at it woth certain codexes than others).
For fast armies, if it is tournement lkevel you're looking at the you can't go wrong with Craftworld Eldar, and White Scar space marines are pretty strong as well. Below that, Dark Eldar can be a lot of fun and in the right hands can do a lot of damage.
