If I take a battleforged army but wish to take a FW model, as FW models cannot be used to fill out slots in formations, how would I take this FW model? Would I have to take it in a CAD or can I take it as a standalone unit (i.e. not in a detachment or a CAD)?

You can take it stand-alone (as an unbound army, which means it gets no detachment benefits), or you can make a CAD and put it in there.

This strictly isn't true there are quite a lot of formations that allow FW units. But most of the used formations do not allow you to take them as part of those formations.

It all depends on the model. There are other detachments that could include the model. The FW Purge detachment for example is a popular way to field CSM FW models.

CADs are a type of detechments..
But no you can't field a stand alone unit not in a detachment if you are battle forged. But you could in unbound.

The unit in question is Vindicator Laser Destroyer(s) as apparently they cannot fill slots in an ATF.

What is an ATF , and of what faction would those laser destroyers be ?

Armoured Task Force- a C:SM formation, and they would be marine vindicators.

Generally the FW unit will tell you how you can take it in their rules

Regular marines do not have that many alternative ways to get them in.

Allied detachment of an other chapter might work of just go CAD

Thanks for the replies, guess its time to figure out another way.

Just go onto the FW websote, and find "Contact Us"
Then Email them the question (E.G Can Vindicator Laser Destroyers be used in Space Marine Formations?)

For Example, i had to email FW asking if Sevrin Loth caould be used in a Librarius Conclave, they replied that any FW Badab War Character can replace a named counterpart SM character in formations (so Loth would Repalce Tigarius)

So how many players agree with this "email" of yours who would not agree to a house rule that you made up to put him in that formation ?

Take a print out of the email? That's as much proof as you need I suppose. I'd reckon the only people who would disallow that even with the email would be strict RAW followers.
