Hi all, old player from 3rd/4th edition returning to 7th, Genestealer Cults was too tempting!

Anyway in my local group there is some confusion around the assault phase, one player believes he can run in the shooting phase into combat without triggering overwatch and then resolve the combat phase minus the benefits from charging. This seems silly to the rest of us for obvious reasons ("oh look those genestealers are just jogging towards us, they don't mean any harm, at ease men.") but in fairness the rules don't say anything about it, only that you can't move to within 1" in the movement phase. Anyone have a clarification on this?

Thanks

The rules for assault say the only way to engage in close combat is to declare a charge or be charged, nothing else gives you permission to begin close combat.

You need to be given permission to do something. Running doesn't say you can run into close combat so you can't (it doesn't work the other way around)

From 'Models in the Way' (pg. 18, main rulebook):

A model cannot move within 1" of an enemy model unless they are charging into close combat in the Assault phase...

Ask your friend where the rules for running overrides this restriction and allows you to get into base to base contact with the enemy, because if you're not in base to base contact you're not in close combat.

Actually, it is for a unit to be locked in combat, since it needs a model base to base to be locked in combat. To be engaged in combat, a model needs to be in base contact with an enemy model or within Coherency of a friendly model which is in base contact.

Fortunately, there is still the standard Ghaz brings up

Which prevents it from being Base to Base in a Run.

Still, if you can Run and Charge, being 1" away makes it pretty hard to fail the Charge (snake eyes while trying to Charge through Difficult Terrain, perhaps?).

You would think that running would be a pretty great way to get close to swing swords and punch people but not in this game.

If we fail to anticipate the unforeseen or expect the unexpected in a universe of infinite possibilities, we may find ourselves at the mercy of anyone or anything that cannot be programmed, categorized or easily referenced.

Technically you run in the Charge, even faster, in most cases.

But there are a lot of things which are "normal" in real life and "illegal" in 40K, such as the Marine carrying a Lascannon firing at Hormagaunts just because the rest of the unit is also shooting them, instead of firing at the Carnifex, Warrior, or Tyrant.

Thats true you can actually get farther with your assault than you can with your run move - however - if you fail the assault you don't move at all...this is the part that really bothers me.

It is that your unit realizes that they cannot make it into melee and so remain in the safety of what little cover they have(open ground usually isn't really completely clear like an empty parking lot).

In thw case of overwatch placing your models out of rolled charge range: the unit is effectively pinned back from the defending unit.
