We own 2 cats. Its part of my childrens chores to clean the boxes every so many days. Well about a month ago they got lazy and stopped cleaning the boxes when they were supposed to. Since the cats had no where to go, they peed in 2 spots over night. I woke up, cleaned the spots and made sure my kids have good reason not to make that error in judgement again.

Heres my problem, no matter what I do one or both cats is still pissing in one of the 2 spots. It seems no matter what I do I cant stop them from doing this. Ive only used soaps and bleach so far and now im thinking i need more but I dunno what to use. Anyone have an idea or solution to this? Im about to either cut my floor up or burn the house down, either way seems extreme.

This article seems to have a handle on the situation.

Could also try other sources through Google.

As a minion to three cats I have some suggestions.

Unfortunately keeping your carpet clean is helping the little kitties as its nice and fresh for them every time they go! (fethers!)

1. Cats don't crap where they eat. Put a small bowl of food or fresh water on the spot where the cats are wizzing.

2. have a water pistol handy, if you spot one of em heading towards that spot give them a blast. if you feel bad about using that then shout or clap your hands to get them to move. They need to do their business in peace and quiet so be a voyeur!

3. If their litter box is somewhere that can be secured, then keep the cats in situ for a few hours, maybe a day. Get them used to the fact that its back and it is okay to use.

Basically you need to try and res assure your cats that regular service has resumed and that its the only place they can crap in peace.

Cats are funny beasts though, it may help, it may not.

Also they detest the smell of vinegar so maybe spread a little on the carpet. Works on mine at least...

You shouldn't be worried about the one bullet with your name on it, Boldric. You should be worried about the ones labelled "to whom it may concern"-from Blackadder goes Forth!

Just went through this with the two male cats in my house. One would tag a spot, I'd clean it, and then the other would hit a nearby spot. This "game" went on for months.

After spending a fortune on a carpet shampooer, countless bottles of carpet detergent, and other remedies, what ended up working was placing a new throw rug over the pee spots. The smell of the new carpet seemed to "reset" the cats and made the hot urine war more of a cold war.

I love my cats, but man, I wanted to skin them each time they'd pee on the carpet.

Good luck.

Yeah! You could get a dog instead. Dogs won't give you problems like this.

Most cats also seem to hate the scent of lemon if I remember right. Probably moreso than vinegar, but a good lemon scent should make them quickly not want to pee in that spot again.

Well according to a google search you are correct! Thats something I'm going to try. Ive been using vinegar and it appears to be working so far but maaan do I not enjoy that smell.

Do NOT use an ammonia cleaner to clean up a cat's doings.

It'll just encourage them to do it again (Male cats especially, as they will treat this new "scent" as the territorial marking of a rival and will want to "tag" over it.).

Citrus based cleaners (containing limonene) work well - cats hate the smell of citrus.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

My girlfriend had big problems house training one of her cats. During the time she was introducing him to the litter box, he got constipated, which was audibly painful for him... after that it was impossible to get him to poop in the litter box, and he would instead poop in her shower. Apparently, cats are quite "superstitious" (for lack of a better word), and once they associate something with something bad, it can be really hard to change their minds. She tried everything to stop him pooping in the shower, but to no avail...

Eventually, what she did was she just piled up loads of junk in the shower, so he couldn't physically get in there. Once he realised there was no room for him there, he defaulted back to the litter box. After he went there and everything worked out for him, he was good.

One of her cats loves the smell of bleach and rolls around in it, wherever she puts it down, so bleach might not be the best deterrent. My advice is just to make the spot either dirty, or cluttered, and generally unwelcoming. If they decide they don't like it, the litter box will probably be their first next best place to try, and if it's clean, you'll be all set.
