Subject: Can somebody explain to me the need for personal civilian bought drones?
I never got why anybody would want to buy a drone from a store. I mean it's sort of cool but it looks unsafe and actually kind of dangerous and i can't tell a real use for it. I mean people often buy things because they have a use but these things are fairly expensive, seem to have no use far as i can tell and they are dangerous. It's like a flying toy helicopter except bigger and more dangerous and i just don't get the point. Why would people want them? Keep in mind i don't mind the idea of drones if they could actually do something but far as i can tell they currently have no real use. Military drones have a defined purpose but civilian ones so far don't seem to really have one esp. for personal use.
Because it's fun, and because they can. What other reasons do you need?
Also, drones aren't really dangerous until you get up to the expensive commercial stuff (like they use for movie photography). The drone itself doesn't weigh much, and the rotors are lightweight plastic that might, at most, cause some minor cuts if they hit you. You don't worry about people having kitchen knives, do you?

There's this thing called "fun," perhaps you've heard of it.
Some people like to paint and play with tiny plastic soldiers fun, some people like to get online and play video games for fun, some people like to work on cars for fun, and some people like to fly airplanes and drones for fun.

People are free to do as they wish i just didn't understand why they would want one. I mean i've never gone around the house and thought 'Gee wouldn't having a drone make my life easier.'

People enjoy photography. Flying cameras allow you to get shots that previously you needed to own a helicopter to get.
They are also very popular in real estate for property sales, agricultural inspections, roof inspects, and so on, but what I am sure you really meant was:

See the above answer.
Also, just because you don't think you wouldn't find enjoyment in something doesn't mean other people won't either.

It's like you guys didn't pay attention to what i said. I'm not forcing people to not like what i don't like i just never got the point. If you have fun and enjoy it that's cool i just never saw a use for it.
They can shoot some amazing video. My parents hired a guy to make a video of some lakeside property they were selling and by the end of it I wanted to buy it!
Plus, it's like an RC car but taken to the next level. My nephew looooves his (even though he's terrible at flying it).

So what you are saying is this should have been a Facebook post instead?

It doesn't make your life easier, it's meaningless fun. Maybe it isn't fun that you personally are interested in, but there are plenty of things like that.

Well, with racing drones you're also building them totally from scratch. There are hundreds of different frames, dozens of motor options, batteries, etc etc, so you wind up with something that is completely unique. Also, I don't believe you generally have first person view on toy helicopters.

I do kind of like the drone racing. Now i imagine some sort of underground drone racing. Wouldn't it be interesting if you could load them up with like booby traps for other racers. That would be fun as hell to watch.

You can say this about pretty much any hobby.
Some people paint portraits, some people collect tiny cars, some people collect tiny plastic miniatures and paint them, some people fly remotely controlled aircrafts.
What exactly is the point of kite-flying? Why do people play curling? What is the meaning behind collecting dolls?
Do you have a point you wish to make, beyond "I cannot fathom how some people enjoy a thing that I don't enjoy"?

A drone is a toy helicopter.

So the competitive (and apparently also destructive) element is what won you over.
What is the issue with a person simply enjoying flying around with a drone just for the fun of it?

Nothing i just don't see it being super popular without a purpose. It's like ok what can i do with it i played some pranks and flew it around and then maybe the enjoyment of having a drone dies off a bit. I like structure and certain points in my game because it gives people in the game something to do. Sometimes in say skyrim you can steal the clothes off people, run around naked, fight off an entire city's guard for no reason but without a point to doing stuff like quests you don't keep coming back as frequently.

Okay, so you've never fielded this EXACT same question about books/war gaming models/video games?

Why people fly small helicopters and airplanes? Equally useless except for fun.

A drone isn't any different from RC Planes that people have run around with for decades, except they can move in different directions like a helicopter. They aren't anything new fundamentally, and people have been into this stuff for generations. Some people just enjoy flying around a small machine for kicks and giggles. They also have many "real" uses, particularly camera work.
They're hardly dangerous, mostly they just irritate people who think they're being spied on or something.

So.....
You have a hard time understanding why some people enjoy something that you don't enjoy?
I feel like somebody have pointed this out earlier in the thread....

"He died because he had no honor. He had no honor and the Emperor was watching."
The only time I might want a drone is if:
I had a reason to look somewhere I cannot go (on the roof, etc), and
I could build it myself.
Off-the-shelf drones are one thing, but there's the rest of the drone 'hobby' you miss out on. Just like wargaming. X-wing goes down well, but I prefer the modelling aspect of 40k.
Boo, building from a kit. Real men program their own control software!
