So lets have this discussion before that can off wurms before hits the battlefield. How would you guys handle line of sight and cover issues with the GW new bases. Just assume that they aren't there, or assume that they are part of the model ? Pictures are in the spoiler for those who have not seen them. The 40k styled ones The AoS styled ones Automatically Appended Next Post: And as a bonus question how do you guys rule models who come right out of the box with similar bases. Such as the most recent versions of the assassins.

Those don't seem to actually block LOS, they just raise up the model. Even the assassin should be visible past the arc.
Besides, I think there is a rule that eliminates the possibility to gain cover from base decoration, for the silly people who model their guy tucked behind the soap box the hero base somehow.

Things that are going to happen with some of those bases.
- The model on top of it standing behind a low wall that isn't much higher as the base. Does it get cover ?
- A model is hiding behind the same wall and the model on top of the base is on the other side of the wall. The raised model can now see the model behind it without his sight being obscured bu the wall. Does the model behind the wall get cover ?
- My grot or jokearo weapon smith is completely obscured by a hero base and no longer has line of sight to a model behind it.
- The base makes the last bit of difference between >25% or <25% obscured for a vehicle does it get cover...

My prediction: next edition of 40k no longer uses true LoS.

If you make it larger, you get the benefits as well as the hazards. The number of times that I've wanted to put one of my hammerheads on a flying base. . . Well there have been a few.

I think this will work that same way it does for all "conversions". Over the course of the game any benefits or disadvantages caused by the different base/pose or whatever will roughly even out.
The important thing is to be consistant, i.e. don't 'ignore' the base for X, but count the base for Y. And I am all for counting the model as what it looks like, rather than ignoring someone's efforts and cool mini

That is correct, but it technically only affects that model.

Logically, its much much simpler to deal with.
Base decorations are static features, the hero on the base does not drag the decoration around the battlefield with them.
So, unless the hero never moves or the base decoration could be easily carried, which would surely have to count as equipment, then it doesnt count for LoS at all.

The problem with that is that the character does block LoS, but if he is on a raised piece of terrain in his base, he would effectively block more LoS because he is higher.
The easiest thing to do is just be consistent throughout the game. He blocks LoS, yet also requires more to obsure himself, basically washing out any benefits or downsides.

Good point, my suggestion only deals with the hero "hiding" behind items on the base and said items obscuring targets behind.
Vertical blocking, like you say, needs consistency and agreement between players.
