How did Perturabo become a Daemon Prince?

I know it happened during the battle of the Iron Cage, but AFAIK he was never aligned with the Chaos Powers before transcending.

This might just be a detail that no longer fits the fluff, but I thought a Chaos God needed to make you a Daemon Prince, it doesn't just happen.

According to the IA article, which I think is the only source on his ascension

The gene-seed captured was sacrificed to the Dark Gods in return for Perturabo`s elevation to Daemon Prince. One insult had been avenged, and since then the Iron Warriors have lived only to settle accounts with the corpse on the Golden Throne.

Since Belakor's fluff being released and GWs distancing from Chaos Undivided it's not clear.

In the 6th Ed Chaos codex Perturabo seems to possibly be aligned with Nurgle as he releases Ork zombies.

It happened after the Iron Cage incident, when Perturabo and the Iron Warriors slaughtered most of the Imperial Fists Legion and offered their geneseed to the Dark Gods.
But really, the ascension of Perturabo is one of the things I have never understood. Perturabo loathed Chaos, so why would he have wanted to ascend?

Perturabo is another Demon Prince I fully expect to return ala Magnus, and hopefully his story is a bit more fleshed out. New IW models would be fantastic!

Yeah, felt the same way too. Almost seemed like a punishment, I could see him lopping off horns and appendages.

I don't recall Perturabo loathing Chaos in the older fluff. Is it in Angel Exterminatus or something?

Either way, Chaos corrupts. What you would at first detest becomes normal to you. Plus the power and immortality would be an attraction in and of itself.

better recheck that. It was definitely Mortarion that was responsible for the explding Ork Green Death blurb in the codex.

Peturabo used Nurgle's power for a machine curse IIRC.

Yeah, you got it right. Though it was more of a case of he created a curse and he just needed Nurgle to help make it contagious amongst machines.
