I'm looking for a cheaper (larger quantity) alternative to GW greenstuff for scratchbuilding large models.
Any brand suggestions would be appreciated.

Anybody else's greenstuff, basically. They're all the exact same stuff (Kneadatite) repackaged with different branding.
As a personal preference, I go for the tubes rather than the tape, as it keeps better.

Going to do this in pounds as it's easier for me, but if you check on eBay you can pick up 36" for marginally more than what GW are charging for 6"

Greenstuffworld is the place to go on eBay.

My tape roll (36") came from Polymeric Systems Inc.
I bought it early last year in a local hobby shop - it cost me around $22 AUD for it.
GW wanted $18 for 6" for the same product. It's just rebadged product (since GW don't MAKE it, they buy it and repack it).

I mostly use the tubes as well, though the tape comes with more yellow than blue and I typically use more yellow than blue. With the tube I inevitably run out of yellow long before before the blue.

It's not really cynical to point out that something that is more expensive than identical alternatives is more expensive than the alternatives...

Pretty much.
but depending on what you are exactly doing
if you need a rock hard substitute for things like terrain and rough forming, then try pool putty from a local pool supply shop.
it comes out more wet and pasty but after it drys a bit, its more workable. and drys super rock hard.
its some good stuff man.

Great stuff. Cheap, easy to use, similar properties to working with traditional green stuff.

Definitely Magic Sculpt. The real benefit of this is that its you can use water to smooth it.
