EDIT: The campaign is now live - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/806316071/mythic-battles-pantheon?ref=hero_thanks

This has been mentioned a little on the Conan thread, but I feel it's worthy of discussion in its own thread . Mythic Games and Monolith are launching a Kickstarter campaign today (7pm UK time, 3pm EST) for Mythic Battles: Pantheon, which is a miniatures boardgame based on Greek mythology. In it, the titans have been released from Tartarus by Hera who has finally gotten sick of Zeus and his wandering eye, resulting in a second war between the gods and titans. Whilst the titans are again defeated, the titanic struggle (literally lol) between them broke the divine power of the gods and scattered it across the land, which in turn has been devastated by the conflict. With no-one left to guard Tartarus or Hades, all of the dead monsters and heroes have returned also. In the game, you draft a force consisting of a god plus some heroes and monsters from Greek mythology (and some from history in the former case) to do battle over the scattered remnants of the divine power, known as Omphalos in the game. You win either by killing the opposing god or collecting four of the seven Omphaloi on the board. You can play it 2-4 player in head-to-head battles, four player in two teams of two, or play through special scenarios.

Mythic Games have taken the game out and about to run a lot of demos in the last year or so, and through that I recently had a chance to play it. I had no expectations of it but was blown away and have been eagerly awaiting the KS since. I'm posting this for selfish reasons as I want as many people to back as possible so we all get more stuff lol. The game is played with 32mm minis. They come pre-assembled and are cast in PVC with spears and other similar parts cast in hard plastic so they don't bend, and are sculpted by the likes of Yannick Hennebo, Stephane Simon, and Aragorn Marks. Stefan Kopinski has provided lots of gorgeous artwork for it too.

There's a trailer video here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9vnRsFO7t0&feature=youtu.be

An interview with Leo from Mythic Games which shows off the minis and artwork and discusses the gameplay and background here (begins around 27 minutes in) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJ4bZRvQ5d0

And the website is here - http://us.mythicgames.net/

Just briefly on Monolith's involvement and the Conan KS, which came up on the Conan thread. Mythic Battles: Pantheon was ready to go to KS a while ago, but Mythic Games and Monolith decided to hold it off until Monolith could start to fulfill the Conan KS campaign, so as not to create any ill will with the Conan backers. It isn't delaying fulfillment of Conan, and nor should it have the delays Conan has had as a lot of the content is already done. The entirety of the core box minis are pretty much done plus some more, they just need some tweaks here and there in the tooling, all the artwork is done, and the gameplay is done too.

I was on the wrong end of Medusa in the demo game I played. She petrified my god (Ares) and took him out of the game for a while. It's an expensive power to do but well worth it.

I probably should note that the photo I've captioned as the core box minis does contain all the core box minis, but it also has Atlas who isn't in the core box. The Atlas mini is gigantic and dwarfs the likes of the Hydra mini which itself pretty big.

The game looks okay, but I am a backer of Conan and a little upset with Monolith right now.. Yes I don't have my package and
the news now it might be December (after retail) before I get it.

But after the poorly managed Conan project, the new mythic miniatures look "just okay". I think GWs Gorgon and Hydra looks better and some
of the MB heroes look a little goofy.. Once the kickstarter opens I will try to give it a fair shake but won't be a first day backer because
that has no baring on when your stuff will ship in the end.

Plus with Kingdom of Death doing a "reprint" kickstarter soon and Blood bowl coming out at the end of the month. On top of Christmas
shopping is coming...My hobby dollars are tight..

The only advantage to backing as soon as it goes live is that there are some Early Bird pledges which are $90 rather than $100. No idea how many. That aside, and as you say, when you receive has nothing to do with your backer number.

I played the first time using standees and with no idea what the minis would look like (beyond the art on the standees) and it's the gameplay that I was taken with. I did subsequently get another game with the pre-production minis and was impressed by them. The basic troops are basic, but the monsters and gods I like a lot. I'm not a fan of the GW Hydra, their recent big plastic fantasy kits do nothing for me in terms of art direction and too many of them look like toys to me, so it wouldn't be fair to say I think the MB Hydra is better given that. Coincidentally, it's not out of the question that both Hydras have the same sculptor. I'm pretty certain Aragorn Marks did the GW one and he's worked on this too.

EDIT: Turns out that Aragorn didn't do the MBP Hydra, though he did do Medusa.

It's hardly a fair comparison, board game plastics vs. HIPS kit from argueably one of the best plastic kit companies in the world...

Well, my Conan box is meant to arrive tomorrow, so I'll have a couple weeks with that before I have to decide on this one. What else has Mythic Games made, though? If they're the game designers, rather than Monolith designing it, I guess Conan being good or bad won't mean too much about how good Pantheon will be.

As best as I can tell the only game that Mythic Games had done was the original Mythic Battles. I'd never heard of it before I did the MB Pantheon demo so don't know much about it beyond MBP is based on it. It seems as if a new version with minis with was in the works at Mythic Games, and Monolith came on board to help out with the miniature production. The game designer is Benoit Vogt, who I think may only have done Mythic Battles. Leonidas Vesperini is also with Mythic Games. He's the one who's been appearing in most of the video interviews for the game. I think he may own and/or run Ravage magazine.

As far as I'm aware Monolith have had little to no input on the games design side of this. The boards were changed to match the format of Conan so they could be used in both games (likewise the Conan boards in MBP), but I'm not aware of anything else. I've managed to get four full games of it in, three 1v1 and a 2v2, and as you can probably tell I'm very taken by it. As I mentioned a bit further up, I originally played it with standees rather than minis and it was the gameplay which sold me on it.

There is also going to be a Conan crossover set available as an add-on during the campaign, though I'm not sure what it will include. I wouldn't be surprised if it included stats for using the MBP minis in Conan, though.

Hah! I was just this very minute looking at this KS (someone in the Massive Darkness KS comments posted a link to it). This looks great! I love that Atlas miniature! Have they said whether the expansions (Poseidon and Hephaestus) will be available for retail purchase? I assume they would be.....

I would be interested in a miniatures only deal.

They will be. Each of them has one KS exclusive unit, but everything else will be in the retail version.

You'd be best off just pledging for the $99 God pledge. It's already got a load of minis, and will have more by the end. Even if you just chucked the rulebook, board, and dice in the bin it'd still be a bargain, and I doubt they could do a minis-only pledge any cheaper. You could probably make a chunk of the $99 back by ebaying some of the KS exclusives too.

The artwork for Echidna has been released, so I assume it's coming as a stretch goal or add-on at some point. She's the mother of Cerberus, the Hydra, the Sphinx, and the Nemean Lion amongst others.

The latest add-on has been revealed, the first in a week to feature any minis. This time it's the heroes of the Trojan War. Achilles and Odysseus are in the core box, making Hektor the obvious omission from this. I assume he'll be coming as a stretch goal.

Do we know for sure that its the final larger expansions?

I don't mind even more content, but i'm getting precariously close to my budget limit for this one. :-p

I can't remember whether it was Leo on the live stream or Quirkworthy in the comments who said it, but one of them definitely said that Hephaestus, Poseidon, and Hera are the only larger box expansions. I'm certain we'll see some smaller ones. They've been releasing add-ons every other day so there's still some more slots to fill. One is presumably going to be the Conan crossover, and there may be something like another terrain pack, but I'm sure there'll be a few more like the Trojan War Heroes still to come. I'd be surprised if we didn't see a Titan as an add-on too.

The figure of $400 for all the gaming content has been floated around. I think it might have come from the designer earlier in the campaign. If that figure is accurate then there's another $75 worth of unit add-ons to come.

"We will communicate shortly on this topic. Sorry but I cannot tell too much as of now… I will just say that if we propose such a bundle, it should be a bargain "
