The TRON-style bright edge highlights on black didn't sit too well with me either, so don't worry.
The first big question comes to this - What colours DO you like?
That's a question that can only be answered by you.
From there, we can discuss colour patterns and techniques. When it comes to depth in a scheme, there's really two styles - Lighter and Shade Down, or Dark and Highlight Up.
Those two basic principles speak for themselves, you start with a base paint, and you either darken it down with shades to add depth, or you bring up the edges with highlights. IF you're feeling masochistic, or extremely artsy, you do both.
At this point, you'll have developed a base colour, possibly a secondary colour (always good to have two colours, honestly) and some idea of the methods you want to employ.
So from there, you can start exploring the scheme at large. Reavers, Raiders and Ravagers are great opportunities for some freehanding in your scheme - swirly lines, tribal spikes, you can have some fun with them. Lets you explore the dynamic between your colours.
The best place to start is a basic, standard Kabalite Warrior, with just a splinter rifle. What's your base colour? What's your secondary? How do you want to apply the Secondary, on specific plates, or mix it in?
Truthfully, the best answer to finding a scheme you like, that works for you, is to, honestly, Play with the paints. Experimentation will lead you in interesting directions, we can only really give you suggestions, as the final decision is up to you.
