So now the Heroes of the Resistance expansion has dropped, many of us who were content with the number of Millennium Falcons that we owned, now have an extra one (such as me). So I've been toying more seriously with the idea of converting one. Has anyone here done this, or tried taking one apart? I'd quite like to remove the cockpit and adjoining tunnel, and reposition it, but I'm a bit apprehensive about filling the gap, and the supporting structure underneath.

Also I noticed in the tournament rules that modifying the models in any way is not allowed. Has anyone had an issue with that?

Also, I can't decide which one to convert. I only have two: one classic, and the new FA one (not counting a Revell, which I might use for parts). I'm leaning towards keeping the classic, because it's... er... classic. On the other hand, new pilots like Rey never flew in the classic, so keeping the FA might be more thematic. I figure if I do a nice job, it won't significantly hurt the value of either. Is there any reason why it might be better convert one over the other?

Can the rectenna be detached and magnetised for a really simple visual swap? I know that there are supposed to be other differences (Engine glow, for instance) but that's surely the one people are most likely to notice.

Damn Calrissian. You lend him something and he breaks it...

The two rectennae can be removed, carefully, and swapped. The only real differences I saw were the gash on the underside and the pockmarks on the top right side. But mine was horribly mangled from bad assembly (the plastic has warped bad) and the wash was very badly applied, so I have really weird colours, white showing, and some greasy watermarks rather than true black-lining. Very sad.

If you can pry the two halves apart, it should make converting a lot easier. Hint, there is a single connection point above the engine glow, dead center.

Magnetising the dish is great idea. That would also have the added bonus of making the dish rotate 360 (and perhaps make it less flappy).

I think the new FA Falcon is the better model, after looking them over. The major differences I've noticed so far (aside from the dish) are: significantly different paint work, new details on the the entry ramps underneath, the damage underneath, the little recess near the engine exhausts has some different gadget in it, the blaster damage on the top left looks different, and the rivets on the tunnel look different (though that last one might just be the wash laying differently on my model).

I think keeping the FA and magnetizing the dish is definitely the way to go. I found a really cool blog by someone who made the armoured YT (link). I've seen the ship before online, but I never really realised how much work went into it and how truly awesome it is... It's both inspiring and intimidating. He mentions using a scriber, which he gets some nice results with. I do have some scribers for metalwork, but they're completely different looking to the one he's using, and I doubt they would work as well. perhaps that's something I should invest in.

FFG disallows changing the shape, but Team Covenant doesn't care for their events. As a result, people make Soontir have a multi-winged ship or some people make glowing ships. Don't know if that helps. <3

So FFG wouldn't allow me to cut a protectorate to show it in that 'pivot' thing it does in Rebels?

I have read that people have managed to play with modified ships, at the judges discretion. I understand why the rule exists, as there are lots of ways to cheat and be annoying with shape modifications, but I imagine "rule of cool" might also play a part.

How on earth could you cheat?

You could model your ship to look like a different ship, in order to mislead/confuse, or model on sight markers or range finders to assist with measuring. Probably a bunch of other stuff too that I haven't thought of.

Now all I see is an X-Wing with a laser pointer glued to it's back, and the owning player faking innocence like they have no idea how it got there.

I haven't watched much of Rebels, but the protectorate is such a boring model, I thought I might give it a go. It's quite a fine cut so I used a hot wire to get it apart, and then sunk little magnets into each side, so I can spin it to my hearts content... It's way more fun now. And if FFG come a snooping, I can just rotate it back to the middle and they'll never suspect

wasn't there a trump wig decimator with a brick wall that was used at worlds last year (maybe it was a regionals)

It's easy to assume that people arguing an interpretation you disagree with are just looking for an advantage for themselves... But it's quite often not the case.

Heh, I didn't see it either. I just read KingmanHighborn's post, and went looking for it. I found this picture though, which I assume is a still from the show.

Yep. He had it at worlds this year (granted, in the team epic tournament, not the main event) and said FFG had no problems with it. But he did have a spare unmodified Decimator with him in case the Trumpmobile was ruled to be illegal, which is probably the best thing to do if you're thinking about bringing a modified ship model.

(And I painted it. I'm sorry.)

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Yes, I don't want this sub-forum to become post-factual. Pics or none of this is true.
