Hello all
I have recently decided to start a Horus Heresy army after several years of playing 40k. I currently have 30 marines, none of which are assembled so they may have any armament that you think best, 1 legion praetor (the one that comes in Betrayal at Calth), 1 master of signals, 1 legion champion and 1 whirlwind scorpius. I have not chosen which legion I will use them as nor which weapons to use, any help with either of those two would be much appreciated. However the legion must be a traitor legion as I have kind of been backed in to a corner with that one. I would also very much appreciate any suggestions as to what to add next. I do not know what armies others will be using in my meta however they will more than likely be using the contents of Betrayal at Calth and the Burning of Prospero.
Thanks.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

Well let's start with a bit about what you like to play: what were your favourite armies in 40k?
We might then be avle to point you at a legion with a similar play style

Right off the bat, do you have the Horus Heresy: Legion Astartes Age of Darkness Army List and Isstvan Campaign Red Books? You WILL need them for playing 30K. There are too many rules differences, wargear, and Force Organization differences in 30K to play it without those books. Before you even buy a 30K model, you should buy those books.

Each Legion is pretty significant with wildly different Rites of War that will dictate what models/units you can use. Each Legion has specialized squads, wargear and a host of Special Characters, not to mention their Primarch, that will heavily influence how you play your Legion and what you take.

Alright... start with this core. Doesn't matter really what Legion you decide on, this will be a solid core.

Praetor: Paragon Blade, Iron Halo, Digital Lasers, firearm of choice
Master of Signal: Artificer Armor, whatever else
Apothecarion Detachment: At least two Apothecaries, each with Artificer Armor
Legion Veteran Squad: 10 Space Marines, Sgt with Artificer Armor, powerfist or power weapon, two Plasma or Melta or Volkite (whatever you would like). Rest armed with pistols/CCW's
Contemptor Dreadnought, Kheres Assault Cannon and melta
Legion Tactical Squad: 20 Space Marines, one with Voxcillia, Sgt with Artificer Armor
Legion Tactical Squad: 20 Space Marines, one with Voxcillia, Sgt with Artificer Armor

That gives you about 1000 points. Shoot for 2500 points worth of stuff. From here, it will almost entirely depend on your Legion. GET THE RED BOOKS!!!

1. In 40k I have played Grey Knights, Tau and Harlequins/Eldar
2. I do not own the red books however I will be sure to get them as soon as possible
3. I think I will build up to that list for the moment as it seems pretty solid (of course I could be wrong, that's why I'm here) but what legion would you reccomend doing

Those three armies have very different play styles: elite units army, gunline army and fast army.
Which of these three would you say you had the most fun with and/or which play style would you like to try out in 30k?
My knowledge on 30k armies isn't as good as 40k but if I remember correctly: the iron warriors are closeat to gunline, the night lords are closest to fast (with world eaters being best cc) and the rest of the legions have variations on elite units being the army core.

I don't think I would like to do an elite army again as that is my largest army in 40k, However both the World Eaters and the Iron Warriors were in the top 4 legions which I was considering. I have all but ruled out the Night Lords as I'm not too sure if i like their aesthetic or their fluff. How would you say the Alpha Legion play in 30k and if i were to do a fluffy army what would it look like. The other legion I was considering was the Emperors Children which as far as I know strive to be perfect in all aspects of combat so I could play them however I like.
Thanks

Alpha legion are chocked full of any rules that are sneaky, i.e. stealth, shrouded, outflank, hiding your primarch in plain sight, etc.
Emperor's children are a more refind and elite world eater's army, being able to kill elite units, like terminators, as apposed to the world eater's ability to tear through regular infantry.

Ok so I have bought the books Legion Astartes Age of Darkness Army List and Legion Astartes Age of Darkness Legions(ebook), I have ordered the first Horus Heresy book (betrayal, I think) however it will be a good few weeks before it arrives in Australia. Over the past few hours I've been skimming over the two books and I came up with a list for the Alpha Legion (although that choice is not final)
HQ
Legion Praetor with Artificer armour, bolt pistol, paragon blade, iron halo

Elites
Apothecarion detachment with 2 legion apothecaries
Contemptor-Mortis dreadnought with 2 Kheres pattern assault cannon
5 man legion terminator squad with Tartaros armour, power axes/power fists

Troops
15 man legion tactical squad with vexilla and combi plasma on sergeant
15 man legion tactical squad with vexilla and combi plasma on sergeant

Fast attack
Legion javelin attack speeder with twin linked cyclone missile launcher and heavy Bolter
5 man legion seeker squad with boaters and banestrike bolt rounds

Heavy support
Legion Sicaran battle tank with lad cannon sponsons

I believe this adds up to just under 1500 points
