Subject: Best Boxed 40k games from GW (Overkill, Execution Force etc)
I know a lot of players or most players buy the boxed games for just the miniatures and could care less about the actual game but I'm the other way around since I don't play Space Marines or Imperium Factions other than Guard/Skitaari
Out of these games of course SPACE HULK and SILVER TOWER probably remains the foremost classic and a solid game. But what about the others?
Betrayal at Calth
Burning of Prospero
Assassinorum Execution Force
Deathwatch Overkill
Gorechosen
Lost Patrol
Any others? Which is the worst and best? I heard Lost Patrol and Assassinorum were terrible... and BoC and BoP seem samely and Overkill has almost zero tactics involved..
Thoughts? Obviously players who actually played the boardgame...

Execution Force wasn't terrible, but it's fairly easy. In at least 6 games, including the last 2 where we added more cultists, we finished with all 4 assassins alive.

Silver Tower is immense and Assassinorum Execution Force has a lot of replay value (what with all the achievements to get). I also found Lost Patrol great as well as you can easily pick it up and play without the need for a lot of setting up, plus each game only lasts about 10-15 mins (depending on how good the guy controlling the Scouts is)

Lost Patrol is very fun and fast paced - it is deliberately designed to be unfair, which I don't think a lot of people get.
Even so, I would say it is maybe a little too weighted towards the Genestealers. A simple house rule of allowing the Scouts to pass on a 5 and 6 greatly increases the fun you'll have with it.
For £35, I'd recommend it - nice for a quick challenge with a friend to see who can get further into the jungle before they're murdered

Betrayal at Calth...The best of the bunch that I have played so far (excepting Space Hulk, of course). Challenging and fun. Not all scenarios are balanced, but it's easy to make up your own, too.
Burning of Prospero...Have not played it yet. Looks like a combination of Calth and Deathwatch, with a heavy emphasis on psychics.
Assassinorum Execution Force... The only cooperative game of this bunch with a clever AI. If it's too easy, just tweak it a bit.
Deathwatch Overkill...This is a straight up shoot'em up with clever "gambit" mechanics for the Genestealer Player. Marines play like they read in novels (awesomely). Not the most strategic game, but fun,, nonetheless. BTW, this one would be very difficult to proxy the miniatures. But, who wants to, it's Genestealer Cult!
Gorechosen...Have not played it. Surprised it got a good review, here. Shows what I know.
Lost Patrol...Fast and easy with clever (I know I use that word a lot, and it IS a compliment) tile placement mechanics. The original was hard enough. Adding Genestealers (it HAD to be Genestealers!) made it ridiculously hard. I guess it can be tweaked.
Genestealers? They make an appearance as models and/or rules of 6 of the 14 GW40K boardgames and expansions that use 28 mm minis.

Burning of Prospero and Betrayal at Calth have been the best so far imo - and I know this is a 40K thread but AoS Silver Tower was probably my third favorite boxed set.

Have played a couple of games of Prospero, which does NOT make me an expert. I liked it. It's easy to learn. Plays fast. It's clever that the Psychic Phase (The Enumeration Phase) comes at the beginning of the turn. Only the Traitors cast "spells" (OK, Powers) None of the spells are devastating, but all are useful. I wont say you can't plan ahead, because you can. But, you can't be sure any spell will go off. If your can get off the right spells at the right time, you can pull off some fun stuff. For instance, My Space Wolf leader was oh-so-close to winning a scenario, but my evil opponent psychically switched out the SINGLE Thousand Son Marine in his way for FOUR TS Marines. Game over, Man! And, to think, I even fathered him and am saving to send him to college!
Prospero is closer to Calth in scale (squads of 1 to 4 figs), with a map and movement system close to Deathwatch: Overkill. Calth puts more empathizes on game system. It's what 40K COULD be. Prospero emphasizes game play. I think Prospero would be the better solo game.

I think the 8th edition starter box was the best. Sisters Vs. Necrons, reclaiming Sanctuary 101, Celestine appearing to destroy a reformed Catan, sisters punking necrons left and right, pretty amazing stuff. And the plastics...whooooooo boy are the new sculpts good. Too bad I don't get to use them much with how WTFOMGBBQ OP the new Sisters codex is. I mean my friend STILL refuses to play me unless he can borrow 3-4 wraithknights from someone.

We really liked Betrayal at Calth a lot. I am going to try the expanded rules for two sets next. I also like Deathwatch Overkill, but nobody wants to play the genestealers.

Let 'em play the final mission and you won't be able to get anyone to play the Deathwatch any more
We have played Execution Force, B@C, DW:O and Silver Tower.
Silver Tower is a decent RPG-lite that seemed more fun than its actual rules due to the story and general fun attitude that James Hewitt and crew crammed into the game.
My favorite for rules that could pretty easily be used for small 40k games would be B@C.
DW:O has a cool approach where the SMs are nearly fluff-level tuff and area denial with model placement is a thing.

I have no idea.
The players in our battle group bought some of the boxed sets here and there.
But just for using the models in 40k/30k games.
We actually never played the new board games.

Imperial Knight Renegade turned out to be surprisingly fun, if somewhat simple. The fact that it was a steal for it's value is just icing on the cake.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

I'm in it for the boardgames. But, there would be NO boardgames without folks buying them for the minis. So, thanks.
I call Betrayal at Calth the best game nobody ever played.

Nice review! Fair, balanced, and informative. They seem to have messed up how they added Genestealers to the game. Key point is after multiple games, no one got close to victory. But, works somewhat better with tweaks. It seems a shame. I think there is an even better game buried there. The theme is certainly evocative.
