Has anyone put out instructions for getting that amazingly bright metallic scarlet that Forge World has on their models? Can it be done with a more crimson color?

You airbrush clear red over a metallic base coat. If you want a more crimson look, mix a tiny amount of clear blue in to your clear red to push it slightly to the purple side before spraying it. Maybe just the slightest hint of clear green if you want to make it darker. I'd mix up a whole bottle of crimson so it's consistent from one model to the next.

Tamiya clear red over 'old gold' comes out like this:

This is slightly thinned, brush painted with three coats - airbrushing is better if you have the patience to mask it

Silver base gives a colder look

not got the hand go changing the shade of the clear colours as yet sadly (would love a more magenta shade personally)

Clear red over gold. Hm.. I didn't even think about that. Most people I know were only saying "metallic" which usually means some sort of silver. Obviously gold helps with the scarlet tone as it's a yellow metallic. Too bad there's no purplish metallic out there.

I'll have to experiment with this.

Buy 1 pot of Tamiya Metallic Red. Buy 1 pot of Tamiya Metallic Blue. Pour Blue in to Red until satisfied...
