Dear Dakka, If I have a Rapid fire/Salvo weapon and the Specialist rule: Reaping volley, how many shots do I have if I choose targets outside a certain range? Specific example, a Tactical Marine with a bolter wants to shoot Gaurdsman A & B. Do both need to be within 12", or only 1? Let's say Guardsman A is within 12", but Guardsman B is just outside 12". In a normal situation, the Marine would get 2 shots if targeting A, but only 1 shot if targeting B, but with Reaping volley, he can target both, so .....can he? Technically he is not getting any more shots than allowed for targeting A, nor are any more shots being resolved against B than normally allowed. Yet in order to get 2 shots to use Reaping Volley, he'd need to be in Rapid fire range, which he is for one of his targets. Confusingly yours -Galef

This has nothing to do with salvo since salvo is solely based on if you moved or not and range doesn't play into the different number of shots.

Fair enough. I was more focused on Rapid fire.

I would say both need to be in range, because you target both models

Old rules had us checking range on a model by model basis, with every model in range to rapid fire doing so, while models out of rapid fire range but still in range firing without rapid fire.
Did something change since then?

i would assume that when you select a new target after the first you are forced to check range again per the shooting phase rules after you select a target. Though it is not explicitly written - one must infer that having fired a single shot at a target at 12 inches or less and slecting another target that the 12" firing mode is what must be used for the rest of that weapons shooting phase. This kind of makes rapid fire weapons a little weaker in in KT because in the main rules if you were firing at a unit of 5 infantry - only 1 of them would need to be in range of each bolter at rapid fire range but all the shots could still effect the whole 5 man unit.

Since you must pick BOTH targets before resolving any shots, my confusion comes from the following:
Marine chooses target A (inside 12") and target B (outside 12").
Situation 1:
If you resolve your hits against Target A first, you get 2 shots, one of them you roll against A, leaving your other shot free to fire at B. OR when you resolve shots against B, you realize that you only have 1 shot against it and have already resolved it against A?
Situation 2:
You resolve hit against B first, which only granted you 1 shot. So when you go to resolve hits against A, no shots are available to do so. OR, do you instantly gain a second shot since A is within 12"?
Edit: Solution found! Do not give Reaping Volley to a model with a Rapid Fire weapon.

Do the thing which violates no rules.
Shooting a Rapid Fire weapon (assumed a 24" one) twice, once at something 4" away and once at something 20" away violates a rule.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."
This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.
