Making a blasphemously (Khorne and Psykers...) competitive list for some local tournaments. We use ITC rules. My local meta is primarily MEQ with some Genestealer and IG/AM. I'm open to critiques!

1849/1850 pts
KDK CAD

HQ:
Herald, Juggernaut, Collar of Khorne (+2 to Deny the Witch), Locus of Abjuration (gives Adamantium Will), Hellblade

Troops:
3x 8x Cultists

Fast Attack:
5x Flesh Hounds
Heldrake

Heavy Support:
2x Skull Cannon

Formations:

Mayhem Pack (3x Helbrute, they must start in deep strike, but they all arrive on one d6. They also must roll a 'Crazed' result every turn, regardless of being wounded.)
3x Helbrute, 3x PF, 3x MM

Cyclopia Cabal
5x Sorcs, ML 3, Bike, Force Sword, Bolt Pistol, MoN, VotLW

The Herald, Dogs, and Cabal will be one unit. This will give the Sorcs a 3+ do Deny the Witch rolls (Ad Will and Collar) and the common toughness will be 6. They'll be rolling on Telepathy for Psychic Shriek, Shrouding, and Invis. The Skull Cannons are there for STR 8 Ignores Cover Large Blasts, the Helturkey will be causing mayhem, the Helbrutes will be deep striking to take out high armour vehicles, and the cultists are cheap Ob Sec meat puppets. I'd take more dogs, but I don't have the models nor the means to get them at the moment

It's not awful but the hound star really needs to be around 15 hounds minimum to be effective. Otherwise you're getting a much poorer return on all the points you invested in psychic buffs. For a much cheaper alternative to the flesh hound models use chaos warhounds from the fantasy range. You can pick up a box of 10 for around 20 bucks and no one has ever batted an eyelash at mine.

Even in this shrunken version I think MoN is a waste despite gaining majority T6 because it forces you to waste 5 powers on the Nurgle tree. The Hound Star needs A LOT of powers to go off to be effective so losing those 5 rolls could hurt. I'm some matches you'll need Invis, Hammerhand, Sanctuary, endurance all just to stand a chance. Not to mention with only 5 hounds it's really easy for a lot of armies to neuter your star if they get first turn. You also definitely want either of the other loci over abjurarion. You've got 15 WC so denying on a 4+ shouldn't be a problem.

Noted, however, I play tomorrow and don't get paid until Friday. So 5 Hounds is the max. That's why I've got to rely on higher toughness to hopefully cancel out a few more wounds.

The stores around here don't even have Fenrisian Wolves I can convert, lol.

But yeah, having only 2 slots to roll powers will be tough, but I figure the T6 is more important. I guess I'll find out.

Isn't it impossible for units that don't have the USR daemonic instability to join units that do, I read that somewhere but if I am mistaken then pretend I never said anything

Also if you have the spare points I would try to give most if not all of your cabal spell familiars because that means you can reroll failed psychic tests and it will make it somewhat easier to get your powers that your hound star needs to wreck face

And have you thought of rolling on daemonology (malefic) to summon pink horrors as warp charge batteries?

You are totally right, which is why Noone runs cabal with Screamers(imagine that silliness). However kdk do not have demonic instability, they swapped that out for straight up fearless, making other dudes able to join them. Thus the reason everyone uses kdk Flesh hounds and juggerlord for their star(again think about the cheese that would be a cabal with 2++ re Rollable Screamerstar).
