I love the models and would like to include one in my force as a 'counts as' chaplain.

They appeared in the books, there is one tale in the Book 10 and they fought versus the Word Bearers.

Not yet - maybe wait till the new Imperial Agents book comes out - likely be in it with fluff examples

(or not)

By 'fighting with' do you mean 'fighting alongside' or 'fighting against?'

The First Heretic (Aaron Dembski Bowden) has examples of both.

Only thing I can think of is their appearance in the Inquisition wars series. They neither speak nor fight in it though. Otherwise I don't think there's anything except 30k stuff.

His pattern of returning alive after being declared dead occurred often enough during Cain's career that the Munitorum made a special ruling that Ciaphas Cain is to never be considered dead, despite evidence to the contrary.

Yeah they also meet the leader of the Brides of the Emperor (who will become the Sisters of Battle) in Vandire's reign and take the five women to see Him, but don't otherwise get involved in the conflict.

They remain neutral...

They are a body guard and watch. However I don,t doubt they would freely challenge anyone who intrudes on palace but no one that dumb..

Even inquisition wars and valdere did not challenge them far as I know.

Sgt. Vanden - OOC Hey, that was your doing. I didn't choose to fly in the "Dongerprise'.

Not totally neutral - after all they take the five Brides to see the Emperor to confirm that Vandire is not actually the mouth of God, they end the entire conflict by that act.

They might have fought marines in the Vandire heresy. Surely the heroic Space Marines laying siege to the Imperial Palace managed to breach the defenses a few times at least? Even with the fanatic Sisters giving it their all a few fights could have been decided by the Custodes taking part in keeping their master's chambers clean.

But if so the records have been lost or expunged. Can't have the Custodes kill loyalist marines, at least in public. And ofc there were probably few or no survivors to tell the tale.

They did not choose to act until then however.

Before that point they held station despite everything.

Aren't they meant to not leave the palace and be entirely busy with discovering and preventing assassination attempts and such? I liked the kind of subtle modern security force they had rather than marines+ that they may be retconned to for 40k now.

That seems to be the way of things these days. After all, it was just a few months ago they scrubbed the Inquisition from the Deathwatch, after all. Despite there being big Inquisitorial logos all over the equipment still, nary a mention in the Codex. Expect Custodes retcon inbound....

They're also containing the demonic incursion from the failed webway project. Fighting the deamons that's been pouring into the Imperial place since the HH.

The Custodes aren't soldiers, they're more akin to gladiators or assassins.... solo operatives without equal, but not so well-trained in squad or larger-unit tactics.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Is that Valdor beating Horus in a training fight fake fluff?
