Hi everyone.

I have a friend who mains Necrons. We play semi-regularly, still batting down the rules, but while she likes the aesthetics of the necrons, she's expressed a bit of jealousy at my space elves' psychic phase shenannigans and wishes to have something to do during that phase.

What would be the best way to invest in the psychic phase as necrons while staying within the rules? Looking at the Necrons allied chart, seems their only choices are Tau and (ironically) Chaos Space Marines. Not sure if Genestealer cults can. I was thinking maybe a Chaos Sorcerer lord and a couple squads of expendable cultists as an allied CAD.

Yeah, Necrons have always had a weakness to Psychic Powers, and this has consistently been presented as something of an achilles heal for them. Back in 3rd edition they did have something called a Pariah though, which was the Necron's method of trying to deal with Psykers. Perhaps look at using the following fan-made upgrade to Lychguard.

-------------------------------------------
Upgrade each model in the unit to a Pariah for +10 pts per model

Pariah Nodes: Pariahs keep a small portion of the living brain from a human with the Pariah gene animated within their skulls. All non-Necron units within 6 inches of a Pariah have a maximum leadership score of 7. Any psychic power causing an effect within 6 inches of a Pariah ends immediately. Psykers cannot harness warp charge to cast a psychic power that would affect anything within 6 inches of a Pariah. However, Pariahs suffer a -1 penalty to their Resurrection Protocol rolls due to the squishy and vulnerable nature of these organic compounds.

Pariah Scythe: Pariahs are armed with special warp-draining blades called the Pariah's Scythe. This counts as a regular Warscythe, with the additional benefit that Daemons and Psykers may not make Invulnerable Saves against them.

Well, my question is why you want to add them and how will you be using them? You cant buff any of your necron units with them. And as far a Witch fire powers, only psychic scream REALLY stands out (vortex in sanctic for those gamblers out there). But lets say you want to use them for a scream unit. There are two or three ways of doing that but you are going to need multiple allied detachments or formations which isnt a problem (except for points) unless you play under a ITC rule set (as you only get three detachments/formations outside of a decurion). That being said a cabal cant really run on its own and you cant put them in any of your necron units so you are going to have to a take a KDK gorepack for them or perhaps a spawn unit if you dont want the gorepack. And after buying both you are going to be down 600-1000 points. At that point id just say play an army with access to psykers as you will not be left with enough necrons to do what necrons do best.

But, just because "I" cannot think of a use for them in a necron force doesnt mean there is not one. Perhaps a better/more experienced player can help you out. But if it were me, Id just not run them. I hope you get a better answer than the one I have given. But perhaps clarify as to why you want to run them and we can give you a better answer. But the best stock reply one could give is run a cabal and a gorepack for them to join. Its point heavy but it can give you the psychic firepower/death star you seek. But for deathstars id look into your homegrown Overlord and Orikan lychstar combo. Perhaps a Tesseract Vault or Conclave of the Burning One can give you the mix up and replacement for psykers. Either way, hope this helped a little and good luck!

Edit : If you running them for a bonus to deny the witch then Id pass on the cabal and just go with a allied detachment of a sorc and a cultist bunker. You can do that on the cheap.

Make a Space Marine Librarius Conclave, apply Blood Angels transfers, bro fist out. Come the Apocalypse, but if anyone complains you can blame it on the canon.

I don't make the rules, I just think them up and write them down.

thousand sons might make a good ally when they come out

It's easy to assume that people arguing an interpretation you disagree with are just looking for an advantage for themselves... But it's quite often not the case.

CSM got the sexy going on for psychic phase. Pretty cut and dry there. The cabal is very nice, and allows for some really good board control. They don't have to stay next to eachother, so you can hide them behind walls of warriors of what have you, and spam powers across the board. Their special spell is nice, but don't underestimate the other powers. Beams and novas can be especially damaging with proper placement.

I dont know, maybe its my meta talking but I dont see a cabal living very long outside of a bunker unit. Perhaps one or two turns. Then you also have severe range issues with footslogging and camping cover. They pretty much need to be mobile imho BUT if Wrath of Magnus turns out as well as the rumors say it will, a cabal on discs with psychic screams may be really really nasty and worthy of a alliance slot.

Psychic Allies for Necrons....

Is heresy. You could however think of adding old paraiah's in to your army by using the the new sisters of silence rules

Take a unit of sos and fluff it as the paraiah's not on speaking terms with newcrons! Genius
