Hey Dakka!

I have been planning out my 30k Word Bearers army, but I have realized that I need daemon allies. Coming along with that is the fact that I can use them in 40k. It would be fun and I have always quite liked Daemons, so playing them in both systems would work well.

In 40k, what do they play like? What does a casual list look like? and what does an uber competitive list look like? I would like the ability to do either.

Additionally, I would like to build the list/army in 40k, and import it into 30k. Summoning is flexible, and as long as I have a greater and a handful of different lesser daemons I will be good for expanding into 2000 point 30k games. So we are talking about 40k only. I would like to do Slannesh if I use them casually, as I really like the FW Keeper of Secrets and the old Daemonette models, but Khorne is pretty cool too if he is especially good.

Thank you!
~Mikey

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

Do you want a daemon army dedicated to a single god or are you ok with mixed dedications?
Do you want your army to be assault based or psychic based?
Are 40k daemon formations allowed to be taken in 30k games?

In answer to your queries though:
The general play style for daemons is hard assault units supported by psychic powers.
A casual list is generally a fluffy mono god army.
A competative list is generally spamming: Bloodthirsters, hounds and heralds of khorne supported by daemon princes, Fateweaver, pink horror WC batteries, Herald of Tzeentch psychic batteries/artifact carriers and nurgling objective holders.

I am affraid I can't be more specific than that because daemons have a wide variety of play styles and combos as well as formations and detachments.

Also I am sorry to say that Slaanesh isn't the most competetive portion of the daemon codex.

I would like assault based, psychic seems very exhausting. And the daemon formations aren't allowed in 40k. I believe I need to use a detachment like a CAD with three HQ's, but if I'm wrong, someone please correct me.

Its a shame Slannesh isn't any better. I would also be excited to do Nurgle, but the FW Great Unclean one is simply unpleasesent and I am not a fan of Nurglings or the beast of Nurgle. I do like the plague drones though. How does Nurgle preform? Could I get away with doing mono-god Nurgle? I would also be okay with mixing Slannesh with Nurgle as I believe they are willing to work together on the lore.

Is there a way to make Slannesh work? What are her week spots? Is there a way to plug them with Nurgle daemons?

Thanks for your help!

Who the hell told you slannesh wasn't viable? You have cheap, incredibly fast and incredibly powerful troops that will outperform any other troop choice avaliable to daemons. If you don't believe me take a simple 500 point list, 2 units of 20 daemonettes each with a herald with a loci of beguilememt and 2 psyker levels, roll on telepathy for invisibility, now you have 60 attacks on the charge with rend and re rolls to hit, essentially meaning you kill anything and everything, terminators and nothing to you, same with monsterous creatures.

I think Slaanesh = bad became the general consensus around the Tau release and has been echoed around a lot. They can be good, but they are very fragile to shooting on the way to getting to what they're good at. The higher the points the harder it seems to become for them to stay a monolist as well, but that seems to be a problem with a bunch of monogod lists anyway.

I am stuck between Slannesh and Khorne.

I love the bloodthirsters, and I have a super cool scheme in mind for the bloodletters (and three blood crushers sitting in my basement )

But I love the look of some of the Slannesh units and the idea/feel of Slannesh in general.

Tzeentch just feels trolly and silly, although LOC is awesome and Fateweaver is even better, pink horrors are pretty cool too.

Nurgle is just gross, so I would like to avoid him.

So for an assaulty army, which is easier to play? Khorne or Slannesh? More rewarding? Cheaper? Sadly, they don't like each other much so I can't combine them into a trans daemon force, but alas.

All help is appreciated! Thank you!
