Sometimes I end up reading about the history of the universe, and I'm like "Crap, in which book do they talk of this?".

I'd really like a list of books and novels which cover pivotal events for the history of the galaxy.

Starting from Horus Heresy, up until the 13th Black Crusade.

Read the entire Horus Heresy series except Battle for the Abyss for a good understanding of that conflict, but you would have to be more specific for anyone to help. What factions are you interested in? There are too many events that could be pivotal to make a list, I might as well say read them all. If you're interested in Space Wolves, I'd say read the omnibuses. If youre interested in Grey Knights, read The Emperors Gift. It covers the 3rd war for armageddon, thats pretty pivotal. You have to find a faction you like and then expand from there. sorry if that doesnt help
