hey everyone,
Due to the Traitor Legions supplement having been announced, I've decided to revive my Iron Warriors in spades, and bring them fully to life.
With Christmas around the corner, i need to make a decision on how to go about bringing my CSM army back.
Is the FW Iron Warrior specific Calth box a decent start? I want to eventually make a mechanized army with rhinos and Preditors/vindicators in true siege fashion, and don't want to spend too long collecting infantry.
so Is the Calth box a good start? and does the FW calth box specific to the IW present a good representation of the Legion?
thanks in advance

I'd say it totally depends on your taste. Iron Warriors are rather "vanilla" CSM, so you could easily take the usual CSM kits to build them.
What differentiates the Iron warriors from 30K to 40K is probably not their baseline space marine, but the daemonic machines they have more access to than any other legion. They invented obliterators, vindicators and seemingly also the dinobots. Warsmiths and all of the formations using them are obviously the most fluffy thing you can do with Iron warriors.
They are also known for cannon fodder cultists/ daemons.
So... you should probably wait for their rules before buying the BAC box since it's quite probable that they get no boni to termis or dreadnoughts.

The problem with Betrayal at Calth is that the power armor is all MkIV armor, which the Iron Warriors didn't have much access to as they were scattered across the galaxy and usually the last to get access to new gear. Most Iron Warriors would have had MkII or MkIII armor during the Heresy and carried that into exile. Of course, they could have picked up other marks of armor over time through theft or scavenge so MkIV isn't entirely unsuitable for them, but it is least likely armor to find in their possession.

What about Burning of Prospero? They're MK3 armor. But don't the IW have a unique Cataphracii termie squad? So I'd have to trade around the Tartourus dudes for Cataphractii to make them work.
I hope Warsmiths become a thing! Like halfwalf between Lords, or even just Lords+ the mechandrites the warpsmiths have!
I love me some daemon engines too, I'll have to invest in them as well. And i dunno about no special dreads, wasn't there a warband led by a dread before Honsou came to power or whatever? Id think they'd get some kind if equivalent to Ironclads if they got a bonus at all.

The MkIII in the Prospero box would be perfect for Iron Warriors. Demon engines en masse would also be perfect for Iron Warriors. I imagine that the Traitor Legion book will have a relic or two that will make a character in a Warsmith.

You can get squads of guys in Mk3 armor pretty affordably either through Prospero or from people breaking up the set on eBay. Get those and some Mk3 Iron Warriors shoulderpads from Forgeworld and you're good to go!

I started with calth for my IW army. I wouldn't even get the shoulder pads, the transfer sheet is a better buy, along with a couple of packs of IW heads. If you have a big gaming group you might be able to trade for some cyclone missile launchers to make siege tyrants.
There isn't an accurate mark for them that mkii is called iron armour suggests that that should be the one. However, due to their early success, they were the first to get new equipment, which would suggest mkiii. They were led by an engineer, so being able to improve their armour to resemble mkiv isn't beyond them. As with all legions, a mix of all armour marks looks best. Calth is definitely a good starting point.

For anyone looking to make Tyrant Siege Guard I'd recommend checking out Spellcrow's Blizzard Launchers.
They look nearly identical to the GW Cyclone MLs and are sold in a pack of 2 for only 4 € which is pretty affordable.

That's the old outdated info from Index Astartes. The newer background states that the Iron Warriors were the first to get all the new tech and Perturabo designed most of the greater advancements himself.
They also were the only Legion with the ability to make more legionaries on board their ships. So that they could replace their extremely heavy loses.

Fluff wise they used any/all but imo look best in mk. 3, more gritty.

MKIII served their fighting style the best. So it was the most used by the legion.
