Greetings Dakka!

This is a re-introduction after a long, long, long break. A few years back I began collecting W40K and then Fantasy, and both games were remarkably good, so now I've dusted off ye ol' fabled Warhammer cardboard boxes that have yearned to see the light for too long, and gazed with wonder at my old collection of models. And with the release of Warhammer: Total War, the hype is literally uncontrollable, especially since my geekery needs to be sated since I've left the World of Warcraft community.

And it was great. Hell yeah.

However.

What in the Emperor's name's happened since I left!? What is an Astra Militarum? Kids these days won't even know what IG are. It seems we've.... moved on a couple of editions, too, and to make it more confusing there's this eh.... what do the cool kids call it these days.... Ah, yes, the psychic phase!

And well..... the.... *ahem* "Old World" isn't there anymore in Fantasy. This creates issues. Many issues. I missed the end of the world and now everyone's moved on without me, leaving me in Ostermark while everyone's fighting Space Marine battles with their little golden Sigmarite Supermen and..... ROUND bases. Ah, but it doesn't matter what base you have, eh? It's about how far the reach of the model is, eh? Well I'll get a 20" radius on all of my models' bases, and all of my handgunners can mow you down.

So looks like I'm playing 40k and..... Space Fantasy..... which is kinda 40k but not really. My Warhammer world has changed. In fact it's been blown up and... put back together again in multiple shards I believe. The world as I know it is gone... So..... Yes. I'm back and I'm looking to expand my collection and get back in the warzone, for the Emperor of Mankind, and for Sigmar.

They definitely are based on Space marines but so were Space marines based on fantasy chaos knights, so really we've come full circle.

Like all things fantasy though, there's more to things than meets the eye.

Haha, what stops model from going on top of that base or for that matter how do plan to maneuver?

Also, your gunners range isn't what it used to be and Faqs made them regular humans again and not aim-bots.

Eh, only gets fantasy Sci-fi in Sigmar's realm of the heavens. Just like 40k gets Sci-fi fantasy on the feudal worlds.

Clarification though, the 8 realms were formed by the winds of magic, not the Old World's remains. The remains were what Sigmar built his palace around.

It sadly is gone all the same, though.

At least fighting for them will never change.

Another thing, if old fantasy and rank-and-file is your thing then give the 9th age a look. Really big community project to cater to that side of the hobby.

Ok: The name changes. GW was involved with some legal kerfuffles over some IP issues and naming conventions (amongst other things). Things did not go as well as they had hoped that they would (the judge didn't see things entirely their way - IP law being a more twisted morass than any of the other branches ) and some things that they took for granted as being "Their" property, ended up not being quite so (turns out, they can't really "trademark" "Space marine" in the way they believed they could for one.).

So, they changed a bunch of names, so that they COULD protect them with trademarks and copyrights and suchlike.
So instead of "Imperial Guard" (which has been used by several nation-states since Rome - at least) they are now "Astra Militarum" and so on. Names were changed to protect the guilty, so to speak ...

I understand, though I will miss IG and old Fantasy alike.....

Still, glad to be back, I'll check out 9th Age, too, see if there's a community by me.

Many of the square based brigade have moved their armies over to Kings of War or The 9th Age where they are more than welcome. KOW gets my personal vote but both systems seem to be doing pretty well.

Welcome home, know what you mean about all the changes, good news is all the models are still valid, just about, just have to rename them.
