LEDs have a long lifetime.
If you remember to turn off the LED after games, it should live longer than the model owner.

LED in the head wont work well. Light will scatter through the plastic and the whole head will glow. Will probably get light seeping out where you dont want it, like from the neck.
Staff tip is tricky too. Hard to run a cable down the staff.

You can strip the cable and use superglue as insulation. It works, and if you're careful the cable is fairly unobtrusive. You'll need to work harder to get the LED hidden though.

Fibre-optics to extend the light reach (no need to hide the LED AND wires - the fibre does both).
Tiny surface-mount LED in the head.
As for the lifetime of a LED - with the right resistor and battery voltage/current, they can last 10,000+ hours. With the wrong supply/resistance, they can last seconds.
