I have painted up some miniatures for the first time and was looking at picking up some foam storage to safely store them.

I am not certain about which option would work best for me so hopefully someone here can help. The miniatures are for Walking Dead: All Out War, so integrated 25mm base, there are a few miniatures who have hands / weapons that extend a little further out than the base.

The two options I can see for a case are -

Infantry - 32mm x 50mm

Light Infantry - 25mm x 50mm.

Is it best to get a tight fit for the base (with some weapons/limbs being pressed into the foam) and go for the Light Infantry case or have them more loosely stores and go for the Infantry case?

Depends on your time pressure, but it isn't unheard of for foam companies to release trays tailor made to fit the components of a given game. I have no idea if that's in the works for TWD game, but it may be worth exploring.

Secondly, the newer Games Workshop cases have a zigzag foam in them which is really flexible in terms of size and variety of models it can protect, and the skirmish sized case is <£30, I've just picked one up for my Guild Ball models, and with some though I should be able to fit the necessary terrain and other bits in too.

Thirdly, protection starts on the figure. You say that you've painted for the first time, so have you sealed (varnished) those models? That will go a long way to protecting the paint work. Most people prefer the finish of matte, but gloss is tougher. It is perfectly doable to gloss first then matte over the top if you want best of both though, just make sure the first coat is throughly dried, otherwise you risk frosting (where the varnish dries slightly opaque, rather than perfectly clear.)

To answer your specific question, as nothing is more annoying on forums than asking "A or B" and only getting told to do C, is if the models are PVC "boardgame" plastic, go for slightly too big, if heard squashed they'll bend out of shape quite easily.

I have not heard anything about custom cases yet but I will e-mail a few of the main companies to see if they have anything on the cards.

I have sprayed them a coating of Army Painter Anti-Shine Varnish. I wasn't certain how much I should have been using so may give them another coating just to make certain.
