After mastering Frostgrave, my 7 y/o son wants to try something more geared towards killing my models. I think we'll try Dragon Rampant next, but I'm wondering if I need to make more movement trays, of if the game works well enough with models in skirmish formation (not unlike the old WHFB skirmishers used to move). Thoughts?

I've done it both ways. When I play with my 28mm figs everyone is mounted on round bases and moved individually. When I've played with my 10mm figs everyone is glued to a base in two ranks.

The game is built for a lower model count (40-50 figs let side) and lends itself to individual movement.

It works fine either way. There is nothing in the rules about closed vs open formations. You base how you want to play.

Works fine either way. We first used nothing and that was fine, but the second time we used movement trays and that really made the game move along quickly.

We made our trays out of CDs. Tape over the hole, put superglue on the tape (to toughen it up) and then make it up like a large mini base.

I assume you stuck the models down with bluetac or something like that? Also, did using the CD cause problems with terrain/obstacles? I can see that as one benefit of leaving the models loose.

Nope, we just set the models on the CD and pushed them around. If the terrain gets dense you can always move the minis off the CD and into the terrain.

I do the same thing for the infantry in the 28mm Mech Attack game that I run at Adepticon. I put the whole squad on the CD and move it around. I got the idea from the "Swatters" game from Ganesha. It's a rules lite Colonial Marines vs Bugs game that suggested using CD's as movement trays.

No pics of the Dragon Rampant game, but here's one from Mech Attack.

Sorry it's so small. The VERY BIG version is here:

Now that you mention it, I recall something about using CDs for Of Gods And Mortals. I have a ton of outdated CDs from previous computers/hardware, so I'll have to give it a go. Thanks!
