Hi people ! So I was interested to do a series of threads of discussion about CSM-Legion tactica (yes, I already know of the existence of 1d4chan, but their page is a mess to read) and I thought I could start with my favorite slaves to darkness, the Word Bearers. So let's try to organize the different topics we could discuss.
1-Detachment, formations, etc.
-->Which kind of list, detachment or formation do you think is the best for the WB (fluff-wise or tactic-wise) ?
2-Requirements and benefits.
-->What do you like or dislike about the requirements and benefits of the WB and how do you think one should get the best of them ?
3-Warlord Traits.
-->What are your two favorite WT and why ?
4-Relics.
-->What are you favorite relics and with which IC would you use it ?
5-Mission objectives.
-->What are you thought on them ?
6-HQ
-->Your favorite HQ and loadout ?
7-Elites
-->Favorite elite and loadout ?
8-Troops
-->Favorite troops and loadout ?
9-Fast attacks
-->Favorite fast attacks and loadout ? (by now I'm just copying and pasting).
10-Heavy support
-->Favorite Heavy support and loadout ?
I'll give it a start :
My favorite relic :
Crown of Blasphemer: 4+ Invulnerable Save, Adamantium Will, and Fear.
What's not to like with a relic that can make you DP even harder to kill ? Give it to him with the black mace and make him a daemon of Nurgle and you have a nice melee beast.

There's definitely a focus on using Daemon Princes for HQ's and then Sorcerers to supplement. The issue then comes from making the most of Crusader as a rule, which means we're back to Terminators and Raptors formations.
Possessed are still a trap unless you Infiltrate them but that's even more points spent that you didn't want to spend.

Only one relic per model.
A lot of the WB relics look good on prince's which is cool.
I guess play up the bonus to summoning is the ideal tactic. Otherwise not much has changed for the WB.

The nice thing is that the 3+ to cast malefic also applies to Daemon Princes so you can utilize the bonus without such a strong risk of perils. Take the Malefic Tome for a 3rd malefic power and Spell Familiar and you have a really effective summoning platform

How much less is the peril chance on 3-s rather than 2-s?

*rather than 4-s.
Summoning is 3 WC. You now cast on 3+ instead of 4+. So, theoretically, you could get away with spending 5 wc instead of 7 and with spell familliar it'd be probably around 80% for successful summoning with 5 WC. Around 90% with 6 WC.
The chances of getting perilled with a DP on 5 WC are around 20% and 26% for 6 WC.
every extra dice spent on harnessing above 3 is around 6-7% more chances to peril

With a spell familiar you only need to use 4 dice to get a 82% chance of casting a WC3 malefic power

An interesting build would be a DP, +3 WC and the Malefic tome combined with raptor talon using cursed earth.
The +1 invul may no be that interesting, but letting them not scatter is awesome, combined with reroll charge (as the pack has no been used in the movment phase). Giving the warp talons MoS seems very pricey, but it woud make it perfect for marine murder.
Cursed earth would also be fun with a hellforged warpack to buff maulerfiends a bit, and buff the IC to 3++.
Making the DP the warlord can potentially give him antoher WC or help buff the warp talons even more
Going to post this in the other thread too

Personally, I think Word Bearers are going to be the best army for transitioning out of a Black Crusade. It has all the same options that matter: you don't get a Maelstrom of Gore, or "Veterans of the Legions" like with the Black Crusade, but Cult Marines generally suck anyway so it's no major loss. Free boons are always nice, and Crusader is a minor bonus but it's still nice to have, especially if you're running a Terminator Annihilation Force, just so you can fan out after shooting stuff. They have the same option to mix-and-match Marks that Black Legion has while not sacrificing Obsec to field their special detachment.
Even with better summoning, I'm still not a fan of Daemon Princes without a 2++. They're just too pricey to use both as beatsticks and as Summoners. Rather, I would just stick to using a Nurgle Sorcerer (or two) on Palanquin, hide them in a pile of Cultists or so, and use Fleshy Abundance to heal any wounds from Perils.
If you're running a Warpack, I kind of actually like the Defiler for that formation, and it would make an amusing candidate for your Warlord. Although you become more vulnerable to stuff like Haywire, you're also now resistant versus a lot of other things in turn, and 3 of the 6 Warlord results are pretty funny for it, with one last one being funny if nothing else (that one game you get a S9 Battlecannon, or automatic Instant Death on your Powerfists...). The ability to grant selective Fearless/Furious Charge (or Relentless if that's your jam) is always handy, and shifting mutation results by +-1 combos with the detachment giving free boons and Favored Scions in a way that lets you play a lesser form of Herohammer. The funniest option though has to be should your Defiler become a ML 1 Psyker.
Think of it. Defilers are Daemons. They also have It Will Not Die and 4 Hull Points. It's overcosted, but with the mix of infinite Daemonforge, 4++, ability to challenge out hidden Meltabombs, and to Summon on a 3+...you have something really funny on hand.
Quick question: Do Fleet and Crusader stack? I don't have the BRB on hand.

I think your onto something with the nurgle sorcerer on the palanquin. the +2 wounds and reduced cost over a DP makes perils less an issue, you essentially can assume to perils every turn and your still summoning for 4 turns, which is all that matters in a game really. You also get double the warp charges and twice the casting since you can double up on the sorcerers due to reduced cost. Not sure I care for the warpack since with that combo your gona drop all your dice into summoning each turn and cursed earth is less useful in the back field comming from the center of some cultists on things like mauler fiends that will be outside that bubble turn 1. Defilers are still way to expensive although I do love that image.

Could roll a warband and have 4 chances a turn for a free dp or spawn. Re-rollable with apostles. Sure, it's not a guaranteed but why not.

After a bit of tinkering with I came up with a list that I'll be running in my local group. It's not aimed to be competitive or completely TAC, but also not too gimmicky
Command
Lord of the Legion 105
Dark apostle (stock)
Lord of the Legion 150
Sorc
Terminator armour, Spell familiar, + 2 mastery
Core
Chaos Warband 900
Chaos Lord
Aura of Dark glory, Bike, MoN, Lightning Claw, Power fist, Blight grenade
Sorc
Bike, Spell familiar, Aura of Dark glory, +2 mastery
Chaos terminators
3x combiplasma
Chaos bikers
+2 bikers, MoN, 2x melta, Lightning claw on champ
Havocs
+1 havoc, 4x flamers, rhino
2x Chaos space marines (stock)
Auxiliary
Hellforged warpack
Warpsmith (stock)
3x maulerfiend, 3x Lasher tendrils
Spawn
5x spawn MoN
1850 total
I like rush lists. Closing in with the maulers, spawn and bikers with the havocs following to handle any (Large) groups of troops. Sorc on bike to buff up, maby roll sinistrum or for invisibility, other sorc rolls likely on ectomancy for movement. Apostle is there for the aura buff, but also because I like apostles (we are plaing Word Bearers after all). I could run the havocs stock for some nice relics
Any thoughts? I'd likely try to move some points around and try to fit a DP in there for summoning (likely dropping the termi sorc and apostle for it)

15 Cultists - 70
15 Cultists - 70
++Daemon CAD++
Disc Herald of Tzeentch w/ ML 2 Paradox, and Exalted Locus of Conjuration - 145
11 Blue Horrors - 55
11 Blue Horrors - 55
I was up against a DE player with some unoptimized stuff, but it was still fairly reasonable.
He ran:
An Archon
3 units of Warriors in Raiders w/ Splinter Racks
2 units of Trueborn in Venoms
3 units of 3 Reavers, each w/ one Heat Lance & Cluster Caltrop
2 units of Scourges, one had 2 Heat Lances/Haywire Blasters, another had 2 Shredders
A Razorwing
A Voidraven w/ 2 Monoscythe Missiles
A Void Shield Generator.
For the mission, we rolled The Relic. The table is a giant "cityfight" board with lots of ruined terrain. This turned out to help me more than him.
For Psychic powers, my Sorcerer rolled Weapon Virus, Gift of the Leper, Incursion, and Summoning. My Herald rolled Possession (which I swapped for Summoning), and then I chose Prescience. One of my Horror units rolled Prismatic Ray, and the other rolled Doombolt. My Sorcerer rolled Nexus of the Gods, letting me adjust Chaos Boon rolls by +-1 for characters near my Warlord.
He kept the fliers in reserve, and AT Scourge unit in DS reserve. I kept the Doombolt Horrors and Terminators in DS reserve. I didn't have Brimstones so I didn't use Split rules.
This is my first time running the army in this form and fashion, so I made a few deployment mistakes. I put my Lord in the center of the action and my Sorcerer (my Warlord) on the flanks. This mostly meant that when rolling for 8-fold path, I didn't have characters in range to benefit from Nexus.
He got first turn, Nightfight, and all the works. He sends a Raider forward to attempt to get stuff in range for Splinter Rifles as well as to disembark stuff for the Relic. His shooting opened up with a single Hullpoint on my Helbrute and some dead Cultists. My Bikes and Spawn emerge unscathed.
My turn comes, and I roll for my Helbrute. He rolls a 3 on the D3, meaning Fleet, Rage, and he must move towards the enemy instead of shooting if not within 12" of one. I use 8-fold path on a Bike Champion, granting an extra wound, and my Lord rolls for Scrolls of Magnus, getting Sunburst. I advance up the center of the board, summoning a unit of Flesh Hounds and a unit of Screamers, my Sorcerer taking a wound in the process due to Perils. The Screamers Sky-slash one of the Reaver Units, and move to the far side of the Void Shield, while the Hounds camp in some Ruins. My Helbrute charges the closeby raider, needing a 10 to make it. He fails the charge at first, then succeeds the second time around thanks to Fleet. He punches and explodes it, killing 7 of the passengers in the process!
The next turn comes and he passes all of his reserves. His Razorwing comes in on one flank, his Voidraven on another. The Razorwing did a HP on one of my Rhinos, the Voidraven kills a Screamer with its Implosion Mine, and 10 of the Cultists guarding my Sorcerer with Monoscythes. Venom-fire proceeds to do another wound on my Sorcerer from failing Look out Sir, and 2 wounds on my Lord from failing it. His Shredder Scourges did some serious damage to my Hounds, Splinter Rifles from another Raider killed my Screamers, his AT scourges killed one Helbrute, Reavers killed the other one, and a multi-charge by more Reavers and Scourges finished off my Flesh Hounds. We made a mistake at this point, and forgot the FAQ said you can no longer consolidate after Assaulting a Walker (which to be fair is kind of a dumb ruling), so I recommended that he try to consolidate back towards his VSG bubble because things were about to get nasty.
And nasty they did. My turn comes, and the Horrors failed to arrive from Reserve, but my Terminators did...right into the center of his Void Shield setup where they can start shooting stuff from inside. I used Eight-Fold Path on my Sorcerer, who rolls multiple boons, getting a 2+ armor save and +1 Strength to his Bolt Pistol (whee). My Lord rolls Inferno for his next power. One of my Marine units disembarks to provide emergency bodyguards for my Sorcerer, while my Spawn barrel forward to provide a backup guard for my Lord. The Bikes start crashing through the ruins, taking dangerous terrain checks. My earlier Biker champ rolled a 1 and failed his save, so that extra wound he got saved his bacon.
It's then that I get my Lord right in the center of all the Reavers and Scourges that rushed forward to kill my Flesh Hounds, and I get Sunburst off. Sunburst proceeds to kill off two Reaver Jetbike units, the Shredder Scourges, a DE Sybarite, half the AT scourge unit, AND do a HP of damage to the Razorwing(!) This left me rolling for Champion of Chaos 4 times, and each time I roll, I roll twice and get to choose the results I want.
Ultimately, my Lord got all his HP back, got a 2+ rerollable armor save, and +1 Toughness just to make things even more unfair. It's at this point we call it, as I still had 10 Warp Charge left for powers, and hadn't even summoned anything yet.
It was fun. :>

@MagicJuggler that was an awesome game! did the 3+ summoning hep anything? I'm having the impression that Word Bearers bonusses didn't really add that much this game (granted, if you did use it you'd overrun him easily). the 8 folded path did do some good though
The sorcerer did good, and surprisingly your lord too. I didn't think that setup would do much (just too random for me).
@Slayer-Fan123 most people take an Aura of Dark Glory to get some points for other upgrades, and as his Lord already had MoT he'd end up with a 4++ anyway.

It is 10 more points for a 17% increase on the save.
With MoT, you're paying the same for a Sigil but with less flexibility. You could have a 3++ instead!

For me, I think the thing about this list is that summoning on 3+ means I far more comfortable attempting to summon with 5 dice, which mathematically worked in my favor. Even with one Horror unit in Reserve, this left me with: 3+2+2+1=8+ D6 Warp Charge to play with. Rolling a 2 meant I had 10 dice exactly, so 5 dice for my Sorcerer to summon, 5 for my Herald to summon via Paradox. I generally don't use summoning as my main strategy, so much as a defensive tool as well as for trap-setting (my opponent got so aggressive killing the Flesh Hounds, that he overextended himself well beyond the range of his Void Shield, hence so many fried Spikey Elves).
I think the Dark Apostle is kind of a trap, though Zealot for stuff that normally can't get it (meaning Walkers) is kind of nice if you're looking to gunline. The bonuses they do get are less apparent than, say, Fearless/ FNP/Relentless, but they are real bonuses. The fact they rely so heavily on Malefic means you probably will get Cursed Earth, meaning you can probably play a more Dinobot-heavy list than most for example. The fact I can get I5 Crusader Obsec Bikers that can reliably buff themselves before a fight is also worth consideration. Speaking of which, Crusader helped compensate some for taking a Palanquin instead of a Bike, since I could attach my Sorcerer to the Cultists and have them benefit from the extra speed as they advanced up the field.
There were a few commentators at the store, some people were surprised I took the Scrolls! I thought it over, and given the choice between adding 2 more Spawn versus adding the Scrolls + a Familiar, I liked the option of adding more versatility to my list, even if it's a gamble. At worst, it's an extra Warp Charge and some extra Deny the Witch for a unit. I was bummed at first that I rolled Pyromancy (I wanted Shrouding or any Telepathy power, just so I had the option between that and Shriek) but this worked in the end.
If there's anything else different I would have done, it would have been to keep the Helcult Brute hidden behind the Cultists, or maybe play a more conservative game with the Screamers (turbo them out of LOS so I would have a future escort for my Herald. I didn't have good model stand-ins for the Brimstones, or else I could also have seen myself doing something like having them hijack the Rhinos for great justice.

Cackling Chaos Conscript

Been thinking on Apostle delivery, what about putting him in a dreadclaw with Knorne chosen, some meltas, icon and hidden fist?
Then a min summoner sorc with Nurgle possessed as mc-hunter squad, with rhino
Some marines in rhino
3 maulerfiends
And the rest of points spent on some msu bikes.
Will fiends benefit from Zealot? The plan is threat overload, charging turn 2

Fiends would benefit, as would any Word Bearer unit really.
I'm looking to playtest my Walking Cathedral list in a month or so if I can get enough Cultists for it, and can borrow/bash a few Fiends. This is a joke list incidentally. 2 primary summon vectors, and the potential for a 3rd summon once a game or so, some limited shooting for transport-popping, and a tide of zealot bodies to march on objectives. The Warpsmith takes a Combi-Melta in the rare case he's in range to double-tap a target.

I gotta ask why you're choosing to go with the Defiler and Forgefiends instead of the cheaper and much more effective Maulerfiends.

Defiler is the Warlord, mostly for the comedy of him getting the Warlord Trait that makes him a Psyker. (Or the other support traits). He's the Alpha so he can challenge out Meltabombs. Forgefiends are there because of reusable Daemonforge, and because they're moving at the same speed as the Palanquin summoners. Odds are acceptable I'll get at least one caster with Cursed Earth.
The Herald and Horrors are another 4 WC, or an auto-summon/auto-Prescience. I used to love Disintegrator Ravagers from the 3e DE dex, due to multi-blasts too.

More thoughts:
1-Detachment, formations, etc.
Grand Host is > than CAD by a landslide. The Word Bearer Warlord Traits are amazing anyway, and Crusader is nice.
2-Requirements and benefits.
I wish the Warband was "Lord OR Sorcerer". Ah well. :>
3-Warlord Traits.
-->What are your two favorite WT and why ?
Latent Psyker no doubt, as Warlord Psyker Defiler is hilarious. It's a tossup between Voice of Lorgar or Nexus of the Gods from there.
4-Relics.
-->What are you favorite relics and with which IC would you use it ?
Malefic Tome is the best "Cheap" one. While the Cursed Crozius is cute, I feel it doesn't play to the Word Bearer strengths. (It could be admittedly cute if attempting to build an "ObliteratorStar" or something funky like that though).
5-Mission objectives.
-->What are you thought on them ?
I mostly play Eternal War, but most look easy to attain.
6-HQ
-->Your favorite HQ and loadout ?
Sorcerer w/ Mark of Nurgle on Palanquin w/ ML 3, and Spell Familiar, and Malefic Tome for the first one (These guys are fun to run as doubles)
7-Elites
-->Favorite elite and loadout ?
Termicide. If I want Chosen in Rhinos, that's for Alpha Legion.
8-Troops
-->Favorite troops and loadout ?
Either lots of Cultists, or some basic Marines: 5 man, Melta & Combi-Melta, and Dozer Blade Rhino. Unlike other Legions, I might actually pay for extra CCWs, as Voice of Lorgar and Nurgle blessings are quite nice.
9-Fast attacks
-->Favorite fast attacks and loadout ? (by now I'm just copying and pasting).
3-man Bike squads. I swap out the Bolters for Meltaguns so I can keep the extra CCW attacks, I give the units Mark of Slaanesh, and a Power Lance to the Champion.
10-Heavy support
-->Favorite Heavy support and loadout ?
A single Helbrute actually (I know it's not actually Heavy). If I want Havocs, I'm doing Iron Warriors or Death Guard. To a lesser degree, the Warpack is hilarious with Word Bearers.
I updated my Hexbringers List incidentally, based on some additional thoughts. It's almost identical to the one I ran vs DE, except I traded in Dirge Casters -> Dozer Blades, and dropped Havoc Launchers for an extra 2 Cultists and to give my CSM models extra CCWs.

Sadly it's illegal since you can only take one relic on a model.
Drop the melee weapons on your basic CSM, especially since they're on foot. Consider running Chosen instead of Terminators for this build (more boots on the ground) and perhaps a Havoc squad instead of a Brute. Any points you can squeeze in to get more models/guns helps.
