Hello, so not new to GW or the hobby looking for some info on 2 armies that are competing for my affection.

Right now its empire vs slaves to darkness a few things i wanna know

1) whats the average point value of games?

2) What a good meta build for each one of these armies.

3) how do these armies rank in the power scales with other armies.

To many unpainted models to count.

The current averages are 1000, 2000 and 2500, with the most frequent being 2000 but closely followed by 1000.

"Empire" offer solid gunlines but you'd do better to bring more than just "freeguild"/humans.

My recommendation is that you get 20 handgunners, 30 swordsmen and 20 archers. Grab a general, they are very good for your army. Then pick up two cannons/ a cannon and another heavy weapon. Buy a hurricanum, they give bonuses to shooting and are very useful. Finally, and to get an effective close combat unit, I recommend you sell your principles and get yourself a unit of concussors from the stormcasts as those guys are far better than either empire knights (which, by the way, are non-existent) or demigriphs. Also, pick a mage
This may be close to 2000 pts, dunno don't have the numbers here.

As for slaves to darkness, I don't know much of them but a chaos lord and a temple won't fail you ever. A mutalith or a slaughterbrute too, but I'm not sure.

3) Solo "Empire" ranks rather low in the current meta but slaves to darkness has done fine in tournaments, although it generally involves elements... by and large and with very few exceptions you'll get more mileage by combining several "armies" from the alliance.

I can't speak to empire (now referred to as Free Peoples/Free Guilds in the lore), but the Slaves to Darkness are kind of an interesting faction. They seem more designed to plug gaps in other Chaos Mortal lists, e.g. Khorne Bloodbound are short on monsters, so you could take a Chaos Lord on Manticore with the Mark of Khorne.

2000 Khorne Bloodbound (Skullfiend Tribe- Aqshy)
1000 Tzeentch Arcanites (Pyrofane Cult - Hysh) in progress
2000 Slaves to Darkness (Ravagers)
