I painted up some tallarn and now itching to make it into a full 1K or 1.5K army! Never played IG before and was hoping to get advice on what to play in that point range before I buy minis. Unsure which leman russ tanks to run with and should I use sponsons? I was thinking something like:

Command Squad - Chimera

Vets - Chimera
Vets - Chimera
Vets - Chimera / Something else?

Leman Russ
Leman Russ
Leman Russ

For the russ varients you run will be determined by the weapons you give the vets making sure you have all your bases covered.

For the sponsons; any Russ with an ordinance main gun gets none. And don't discount a pintle heavy stubet on an anti infantry varient.

For the something else, look into armored sentinels, I know a lot of people don't like them so you can likely buy them cheap bit lately I have fallen in love with those little boogers. Leave them cheap they work wonders.

For the vets I was thinking x3 plasma or melta. Unsure which is better although I know they're different. I love the sentinel kits so maybe ill run 3 of them. Since I last played 40K 2nd - 4th there were less russ tanks. I remember the leman russ exterminator was pretty great in my space wolf army ! Anyways I just want the list to be well rounded as I am learning again. I was thinking one stock with no sponsons and another for heavier infantry and the last for lighter infantry. Any help with the russ choices would be great!

so I personally prefer a more foot guard list so if some one knows better hop on. also because of that I cant garuntee its really 100% effective. A quick list i tossed together that looks half effective on paper anyway. Also trying to keep it close to what you wanted to play.

1000 pts

HQ:
Company command
Carapace armor (because HQ)
4x Melta
Chimera

Troop:
Vets
3x Melta
Tourox Prime

Vets
Grenadiers (because plasma)
3x Plasma
Tourox Prime

Vets
3x Flamer
Chimera

Fast Attack:
2x Armored Sentinels w/ Multi laserss

Heavy:
Russ w/ Battle Cannon
Russ Exterminator w/ Hull lascannon

*Note I have never used the tourox so I can't guarantee its a great buy but at 1000pts i needed to save pts some where, and they have the auto cannon turret, which the list needed some medium strength guns at range. Your heavy tank/infantry is coming from all the melta and plasma.

thanks for making a quck list! Finally found all the plasma and melta on ebay so I bought everything i wanted. I opted for a 3rd russ over the imperial guard sentinel. Unsure if that was wise or not.

Unsure if I should play x3 units of vets and two leman russ instead @ 1K. Back when I played a lot of 40K squadrons did not exist. An exterminator in the same squad with battle cannons seems not so great. Also reading around online lots of people trashing the exterminator.

Currently I have

HQ:
Company command
Carapace armor (because HQ)
4x Melta
Chimera

Troop:
Vets
3x Plasma
Chimera

Vets
3x Plasma
Chimera

Heavy: Russ Squadron
Russ w/ Battle Cannon
Russ w/ Battle Cannon
Russ Exterminator w/ Hull lascannon ?

Squadrons are bad if you can avoid them, as hits are transferred. So if a squad gets 2 penetrating his and both end up as explodes you lose both tanks instead of one dieing twice. Didn't mean to imply they would be squadrons.

Is 3 russ better than 2 and a vet squad? Not my preference but could work, just not my play style. However none of those models will go to waste in higher point games either. So your not wasting money

Hull lascannon for exterminator was because the list needed a little extra ranged punch and it fit the role I intended the exterminator to play (anti tank/range heavy infantry killing) most of the time I wouldn't put a hull lascannon, but 1k pts lists get wierd some times as points are a premium

what about something like this. Thought about using the Scions as objective grabbers or utility deep striking in and I like the models. Read thy're kind of stinky though. If i dont take them I guess another unit of vets or setinals? Just wanted some variety.

command squad - 173
x4 melta
Carapace armour
chimera

vets - 185
x3 plasma
Grenadiers
chimera

vets - 185
x3 plasma
Grenadiers
chimera

x10 Militarum Tempestus Scions 160
x2 melta
( deep strike unit )

Heavy
LRBT - battle cannon 150
LREX - Exterminator 140

Total 993

It fits my play style more but doesn't mean it's the only way to go. The thing with scions is they hit hard (Ap3 guns) and die fast (because they are guard). So they work two ways one is drop them in with the intent of hurting/killing high value target and then dieing, and as a scare tactic. Keep talking them up while they are in reserve, any time your opponent starts to moving something where you really don't want them to. Remind them of what's coming.

If your using them just to hold an objective your not getting your points worth out of them. Grenadier vets in a chimera can get to an objective faster (turn 1) and die just as hard.

Just looking at this list aloNE I think you would get more out of 4 armored sentinels but $ wise might not work for you. (I've been collecting guard for 10+ years so options is something I have in spades....did not realize the cost of those little walkers these days.....yikes yeah maybe not)

However remember to play what you like, as I said any of those models will serve you well in larger point games.
