VOTLW is free for legion detachments

For me, the benefits of the IW detachment don't outweigh the tax units in the warband, especially if you aren't taking ordnance or fortifications.
CAD seems much easier to build lists with.

you dont think having tank hunter on objective secured havocs and deep striking obliterators is worth the tax of a semi descent obj secured chaos warband?
and then also being backed up by a reliably strong renegade knight?

Objective secured on the havoks is absolutely great but has to be weighed against the tax units, which feel tacked on. You still get tank hunters in a CAD, and your tax can be two tank hunting oblitorators to fill out the troop.

You can still take a renegade knight and the cult of destruction with a CAD, which are great, and it free's up points for stuff you want to take, rather than tax units.

I guess it's the warpsmith that is the tax, and maybe the CSMs?

Otherwise, I am not getting the criticism. The Warpsmith is a fluffy choice that fits well with the rest of the army. The CSMs, well, you have to have someone standing in the backfield.

i feel like warband is the strong object taking suicide units, the obliterators deep striking and tank hunting are strong... backed up with a knight and a warpsmith reparing the knight and such all complement each other well, also the warpsmith granted a 2nd shooting attack for one of the oblit units...i feel like while the warband and warpsmith is a tax, there not absolutely useless

thats the csm's only job....4 obj secured units taking up backfield maybe popping a random vehicle with he melta/or contesting an objective

There are benefits sure, if you want to take the terminators, bikes and marines, then making them all obsec is cool. And actually I'd forgotten you get stubborn on top, which is pretty useful.

I wonder how it trades off against a black crusade detachment. You don't get the stubborn but you do get hatred all imperials and a free boon a turn, which the warbands scion of chaos rule doubles to two boons. Quite fun, but possibly not as useful as the stubborn from the Grand Company.

wouldnt i gain the rules from the warband and the stubborn from iron warriors?

1. You select a Legion, that grants you free VotLW, some other bonuses and imposes some restrictions (usually regarding named HQs and Marks).
2. Each legion has a unique formation, which grants more bonuses to everyone in it's detachment. The usual requirement is the vanilla Warband formation as a core and an auxiliary choice. Obviously you will get the bonuses from warband and the auxilia, on top of your Legion's bonuses and the bonuses from your Legion specific formation.
