Poll Question: Do you conform to strict set of Points Limits in games, or do you not mind?

Let me explain:

Among my group of close friends that play 40K, we almost exclusively stick to multiples of 250 Points with the exception of 1,850 Points. So - for example - we would never play a game with a 1,600 Points Limit because it's not a multiple of 250. So we 'Conform to a Strict Set of Points Limits'.

Do you guys do this? Or - for you - is it a case of "As long as we have a points limit, I do not mind."?

I'm kinda in 2 circles for games. One with my most competitive friend and we play anywhere from 1850 to 3000 points
And my other friends we play anywhere from 2500 to 30000 points minimum but prefer 5000 points or more. My last game was 7000 points.

The rewards of tolerance are treachery and betrayal.

That's Impressive! haha I'm only delving into the 2,000 - 3,000 Point Range for the first time ever in January and I've been playing for a bit over 2 years now haha.

Haha. We've been gaming together for.15 years give or take. We've gone through changes over the years and those of us who don't get to game as often like to go large. When we can.
I took 360+ Ork to a game one time just for the epicness of the fight. Nearly won too. Haha.
I drive between 1 hour 40 to 2 hours for my games so they have to be worth the driving. The big thing is having a good time and looking forward to the next one!

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

I would suggest a revision of the question in your poll as it is not a yes or no question.

My gaming group has a varied group of players who all have different play styles, some are veterans, some are novices, some only play 40k when requested to, some like playing at high point levels, some at low and some like to play at strange point levels.

My closest friends within our group prefer the 1500-2500 point level, I prefer the 3000+ and the novices prefer 200-1000 points. The strange case is a fellow in our group who will create a list that is say 567 points then set that as the point limit and say you aren't allowed to take x, y and z: he likes to take advantage of the younger players (no not in that way). Luckily us veterans are there to unravel his schemes.

Either or questions can't be answered with yes or no in a way that makes logical sense.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Most people have pre-designed army lists for 500pt increments along with special cases like 400 and 1850 that have been accepted as standard sizes. For an odd-ball like 1600 you're asking your opponent to make a list especially for that game, which they probably don't have ready. It's probably fairer for you to trim 100 points from your list than impose on your opponents to make a new one.

If it's a scenario or narrative game, then it's whatever makes sense and the points values mostly are used as a rough estimate, since going more than 20% off in either direction can make things too lopsided to be fun.

I am comfortable in playing 500-4000 points, however I like to play small games 500- 1500 due to transport issues. Moving 4000 points of orks isn't that fun at all when you are transporting it all by bike or public transport. There are no pre designed list I just make up a list that I like a the moment.

I'm gonna be a unique case here, but I play exclusively with my mom due to some severe social anxiety problems.

My mom plays a fairly consistent list, I prefer to write a new list for every game.

Our points limits for games thus don't exactly have a standard variance, we just play whatever points limit we feel like, since there are only two people in the entire group and my mom doesn't really care much about the specifics, she just add or removes units as needed.

Also, if you're going to try to explain how to deal with social anxiety problems so I can play at a local store, I would ask you to first consider that these social anxiety problems have been a serious problem for half of my life, and despite seeking treatment by a competent psychiatrist they have continued to hamper my life. Please, I beg you, consider what this means for how severe and impossible to overcome my personal issues must be, and do me the favor that so many in the past have not, and do not subject me to the typical speech I get from random people who believe they can solve my decade-long, life-destroying problem with the most basic advice imaginable that is literally step 1 in the troubleshooting manual for anxiety.

I generally play at 1000-1500, with 1850 for events, the occasional 200 (kill team) or 500 if we're playing all infantry or some special case.

At the same time, I've played a few oddball games. "Bring everything you have" games, so the person with the least stuff sets the points value. Odd stuff like 2635 or 3120 or what have you. Always multiples of 5 though.

Point limit is bit meaningless for us since we have campaign games so size of game and sizes of respective armies varies. It can be anything from 1500 pts or so per side to 1200 vs 1800 pts to 4000 vs 5000 etc depending on story of the particularly battle.

We are about capped around 4000-5000 pts though due to lack of painted models for imperium.

I've done all sorts of different types of point limits. i try to do 250 point increments, but sometimes someone can't get a new model table ready in time or has something sweet to try out so we just do whatever.

We generally like smaller games.

Now it's all about the 1k + 1k vs 2k sin e we tend to be odd numbered.

But varies from 1k to 1.5k to 2k.
But since I'm total trash at list building and usually slap whatever I feel like playing without any concern of viability (since that's what I like), but it's been increasingly getting boring for me because everyone slowly piling into the meta with grave bs and rerollable jink bikes or air spam or eldar jetbikes.

I play 40k for fun and to just have fun and shoot stuff. If it keeps going I might start thinking of just selling my stuff. I rather not play then grt tabled everygame because i'm the only one trying to be fluffy and having silly lists.

My gaming group usually plays 2000points. Lower point values only if someone wants to try out a new army and hasn't 2000P ready yet.

My group usually does 2000, 2500, 3000, 4000. Anything much bigger is 'apoc', and we work that out case-by-case. Smaller is often done on an ad-hoc basis for folks just starting or switching armies or for team games, etc.

Most of us have Battlescribe on our phones, though, so creating new lists on the fly isn't too hard.

I generally don't like playing beyond 1500. 2000pt games I used to do a lot in the past would take hours and often your attention span just disappears, or the board feels too cluttered, etc.

The most fun is about 500-1000 it feels a lot more tactical.

We normally play 1500, 1750. 1850 or 2000, anything more and it takes too long, less and it doesn't feel tactical enough.

I feel bigger games give more room for different tactics, you have to choose what is the biggest threat and focus on it, in smaller games it just feels like oh look there's his one tank, well I know what my one anti tank squad is going to be shooting at.

I'd say yes for the most part. We play 1000, 1500, 1750/1850, and 2000. Occasionally we'll do 500 or more than 2000, but in those situations we still stick to clean numbers. We've almost never said "put together a list, and I'll match its points value", and even when we have, whomever makes the lists often sticks to one of these points values.

We don't use points. Just throw down what fits the scenario or seems right. If things are uneven, then bring on something additional a bit later. We also have units leave the table mid game sometimes, represent them being called elsewhere urgently.
