Hello,
So I am a BRAND new "player" in the world of 40k and tabletop war games in general.
Finished the rulebook and decided that the Necrons might be my best first investment into the game.
I like the reanimation, the color-scheme and look of the Necrons, and they seem not extremely challenging for a new guy to paint decently. And unlike the Orks (my other fave) it sounds like I can get the same bang for half my buck (model count wise). A durable well rounded army from the sound of things and recommendations given to me.

Now my question is, I'm probably going to pick up a "Start Collecting" box of Necrons to start. What would be ya'lls recommendation to add to that to get myself a decent little 500pt+ army I can start to play with. Not going pro ever, just want something I can at least hang on a few turns with before getting destroyed
Appreciate any tips and I hope I posted this in the right area.

Welcome to the hobby!

Some good contenders to add to the start collecting box would be more Warriors (Warrior Box) which will give you another troops choice, a squad of 3 Wraiths is also a fantastic option for melee, as they are an extremely strong melee choice.

Past that, maybe a Ghost Ark for transport of one of your Warrior Squads.

That will give you some added models that will grow the force in a logical direction. You have two troops (warriors) plus the HQ (Overlord), plus the scarab swarm, a Triarch Stalker, and some Wraiths. Next after that you'll want some 'big guns' in the form of Destroyers and Heavy Destroyers.

I hope this helps and welcome to the hobby once again!

Take it easy.

You don't know me son, so I'll explain this to you once: If I ever kill you, you'll be awake, you'll be facing me, and you'll be armed.

If you can somehow manage to find one of the old Necron Battleforce boxes on eBay or Amazon, that'll be a good pick up. It has more Warriors (20, I believe) and Scarabs, some Immortals, and a Ghost Ark. Really too bad GW discontinued it when they launched the SC box.

1000 Tzeentch Arcanites (Pyrofane Cult - Hysh) in progress
2000 Slaves to Darkness (Ravagers)

There's also the "armoured assault" box-sets that are due for release in January - A unit of Warriors plus a Ghost Ark for a probably decent discount.

I guess before we get too much further into this discussion, we should probably ask what sort of list are you looking to build? Competitive? Fun? Fluffy?

If competitive, you'll need to put together a Decurion with a Canoptek Harvest or maybe Destroyer Cult. The Necron formations are also really fluffy, so there is some overlap if that's what you're looking for. If you're just looking for fun, then that's going to depend on what you consider "fun".

Thanks for all the tips so far, I appreciate it!
I didn't know about those January boxes, I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for that too. Seems like an ark is mandatory at some point. Just need to know priorities

Well if it isnt fun, whats the point right?
I'm not sure what you mean by fluffy (story driven?) but as far as competitive goes, I'm never going to be a tournament guy. Hell I haven't even had a chance to play a real round yet lol. A smaller effective army I can win some and lose some is just fine with me for now, just something I can keep up and stay in the mix with.
I imagine i will become more of a ranged/shooting player over time since thats how I normally gravitate in other games. (I also looked into Tau for that but the wimpy close combat worried me for a beginners army)

Thoughts on adding Deathmarks or Immortals?

Also, what are your recommendations on the gun options for the Stalker? Opinions?

I'm a big fan of the Heat Ray although now I've discovered the uses of magnets I can switch out to whatever takes my fancy. Heat Ray is pretty damn good, though.
