I'm planning how I'm going to paint Burning of Prospero, and want to make sure my wolves look great, I know how I'm going to do the thousand sons, but I can't decide on exactly how to do the Wolfy elements. I want to stick strictly to fluff, and keep the models as show pieces for the board game, they might both get expanded into small Horus Heresy forces at some point but for now, their just going to be for the board game.
So I've a question for all you fluff hounds.
When did the Space Wolves change the colour of their armour from the dull battleship grey to the kind of ice blue grey that gw paint them in? Is there anything in the fluff that explains the colour difference, or is it just a matter of Forgeworld painting the wolves differently to GW?

As far as I know there's never been any fluff actually written about the change, but it does come from the GW. The Forge World Scheme is based off the Pre-Heresy Space Wolf from the Index Astartes article:

The darker grey was also used for the 13th Great Company in Codex: Eye of Terror, though they had black shoulderpads and a crescent moon behind the wolf head.

Home and away colours like a football team.
Ice blue and yellow is home colours, gunmetal is when they go a visiting.
Regardless - Gunmetal, gold and red looks better every day of the week.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go. |

It looks so much better....but it's also the colours I chose for my Raven Guard Succesors. So I'm kind of thinking of doing the wolves from Prospero in the modern scheme. Would it be too jarring fluff wise? I mean the Leman Russ model GW released years ago had the bluish grey in its Eavy Metal job didn't it.

Grey Space Wolves is not just a Heresy thing. Way back in 1st Ed., SW's were grey in the current 40K.

You know I've always thought Space Wolves were 2nd edition. That's the earliest I've ever heard of them until now. Automatically Appended Next Post: General Kroll wrote: Dakka Wolf wrote:Home and away colours like a football team.

Ah. I understand that problem.
If you kit bash I do have a solution though - WFB Chaos warriors come in a twelve pack, they're basically warriors with fur cloaks, if you have the patience you can make some really nice Space Wolf rank and file by fitting them with Bolters, helmets and backpacks, you also get a heap of axes, clubs and hammers.
Might not have different colours to your successor chapter but they will look very different.

I was actually thinking of just getting some space wolf upgrade packs. Adding a few bits of furry memorabilia to the squad leaders etc. Idk, I will have to have a bit if a think. I mean it's not the end of the world that they are the same colour, it's just a bit boring.

I've never been interested in 40K Wolves, but I do quite like their 30K look. Very nice indeed.

Homebrew Imperial Guard: 1222nd Etrurian Lancers (Winged); Special Air-Assault Brigade (SAAB)
Homebrew Chaos: The Black Suns; A Medrengard Militia (think Iron Warriors-centric Blood Pact/Sons of Sek) |

Yeah. Although I think it's as much to do with the fact that 30K Space Wolves are nordic/viking themed Space Marines, whereas 40K Space Wolves are Space Marine themed Wolfity, Wolf-Men, as it is to do with their colours.

Even a goodly number of Space Wolves payers will agree with that sentiment. For me it's just the lazy names, I love the TWC, Wulfen and Wolf Priest models - I just wish "Wolf-insert generic title here" was replaced with Skandinavian type names...one can dream.

Space Wolves go back to Rogue Trader. And, I guess they were kinda blue-ish.

I'm doing mine in modern colours I find the other grey too dull personally and this way my army works in both versions.

To me, the Space Wolves have always been, and always will be Grey. That's how I have my Great Company painted, and I see no reason to paint them some weird baby blue.

maybe a wolf lord named Kloulv it sounds pretty vikingish, but essentially translates to wolf claw

That's exactly what they do.
I'd like to see Wolf Lord replaced with Jarl - Earl
Replace Wolf Guard with Sigvard - Victory Guard
I want my Great Companies back not this Great Pack rubbish.
Wolf Scouts could be Skuta.
Google Search by the codex writers could make the codex less jarring to read.
