Hi,

Used to be into 40k a while back in 2nd Edition (though I couldn't appreciate it so much when I was a kid). With 2017 being the 30th anniversary of 40k I thought it might be a fun time to get back into it. I already have a Dark Vengeance box-set (with DA chaplain) from when I was considering getting back into the hobby a previous time (all still un-assembled so you can tell how well that went), picked up some Custodes sprues (5 men - because holy expletive) and am seriously considering picking up the Start Collecting: Skitarii box-set (I've always been interested in the Adeptus Mechanicus). Now, having not played any games of 7th Edition whatsoever, I was wondering if anyone has advice on whether chucking these models together would work out alright. I'm thinking DA/AdMech at 1000pts and just chuck in the Custodes to expand to 1250pts when required.

Here's a 1000pt list:

Combined Arms Detachment - Dark Angels

Chaplain (1)
1 Chaplain: Plasma pistol

Tactical Squad (5)
1 Sergeant: Plasma pistol,Chainsword
1 Tactical Marine: Bolt pistol,Plasma gun
3 Tactical Marine: Bolt pistol,Boltgun

Tactical Squad (5)
1 Sergeant: Boltgun,Chainsword
1 Tactical Marine: Bolt pistol,PlasmaCannon
3 Tactical Marine: Bolt pistol,Boltgun

Deathwing Terminator Squad (5)
1 Deathwing Sergeant: Storm bolter and Power weapon
1 Deathwing Terminator: Assault cannon,Power fist
2 Deathwing Terminator: Storm bolter,Power fist
1 Deathwing Terminator: Storm bolter,Chainfist

Ravenwing Bike Squad (3)
1 Ravenwing Sergeant: Bolt pistol,Melta bombs
1 Ravenwing Bike: Plasma gun,Bolt pistol
1 Ravenwing Bike: Bolt pistol

Dominus Maniple - Adeptus Mechanicus

Tech-Priest Dominus (1)
1 Tech-Priest Dominus: Volkite blaster,Phosphor serpenta,Refractor field

Skitarii Vanguard (10)
1 Vanguard Alpha: Phosphor blast pistol,Taser goad
1 Skitarii Vanguard: Arc rifle,Omnispex
2 Skitarii Vanguard: Arc rifle
6 Skitarii Vanguard: Radium carabine

Onager Dunecrawler (1)
1 Onager Dunecrawler: Twin-linked heavy phosphor blaster,Cognis heavy stubber

As everything is still un-assembled and half of it isn't even bought yet, I'd love to hear any suggestions/thoughts - though I would really like to keep some Adeptus Mechanicus in there and still keep the list in the 1000/1250pt range.

I'd normally suggest against mixing two armies at 1k but this works.
A few minor changes i'd make personally:

- Change the chaplain to an interrogator chaplain, if your playing DA you really shouldn't ever field a normal chaplain.

- Put the plasma gun and cannon from the tactical squads in one squad and run the other basic.

- Switch the phosphor blaster on the dune crawler to a neutron laser.

- Drop the pistol and goad from the alpha, i've never had Melee weapons on alphas make thier points back.

They're all little differences but they'll add up in a game.

The next step i'd do is to switch to using a skitarii maniple by dropping the dominus and replacing it with a basic 10 man vanguard squad. (or rangers if you prefer)

Grey Knights - 3500pts
SKitarii - 4000pts
Ad mech - 2000pts
Imperial Knights - 1000pts
Black Templars - 3200pts
Genestealer cults - 1750

I'd definitely argue against this suggestion - the plasma cannon is Heavy, whilst the plasma gun can move and fire. Having them in the same unit hampers the mobility more than it needs to. This is particularly true as they are being used as two separate troop choices to fill the CAD mandatories, as putting them both in one unit is not allowed.

I agree with this. You want your plasma cannon to move as little as possible. If you have them both in the same squad it'll cause some problems. Plus you'd have to take a 10 man squad to do it.
