Subject: Just started playing Warhammer 40k

I just wanted to post and say that I just started playing Warhammer 40k in Christmas 2016 so any tips will be useful. I just got the dark vengeance starter set so I could learn the rules of the game. But neither the dark angels or the chaos space marines really appealed to me. I narrowed it down to either the tau empire or th Tyranids but I can't figure out which one to choose. Any help with that decision would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks to anyone who replies!

Play whichever army you like the aesthetic/look/fluff/colors/playstyle of!
You'll also have to spend money, build, and paint them!

Thanks and I do know all that stuff. I've tried painting and it didn't work out so well but I still enjoyed doing it so that had to be a good sign, right?

Well yeah.. if you enjoy it, you keep on doing it and maybe watch/read a few tutorials and will get better over time.
Welcome btw.

Welcome to 40k!
Don't rush to buy too much, if you can help it. Even if you've read up as much as you can on a particular unit or something... see if you can try them out in a game before buying them by proxying them in a practice game with some friends. Planned tactics and theory are cool and all but sometimes you don't find certain quirks until you've applied it on the field.
Good luck! Have fun!

Welcome! The only advice I have is keep going on the painting (it can be frustrating at first, but then there's that moment where something looks cool!) As to Tau or Tyranid...think this way, one is best at staying back maneuvering and shooting, while the second is a rush to grip with the enemy. So maybe play some games with proxies or watch (there's a lot of great battle reports videotaped here) and decide which might fit your play style.

I never forget the Dakka unit scale is binary: Units are either OP or Garbage. |

First off, welcome to DakkaDakka! Second, if you could see my first models...
Practice makes perfect friend, I didn't truly get close to "good" until recently, after a couple years of bad minis. As for an army, start small, the start collecting bundles right now are a really good deal and start you out with a good sized army. I bought the Tau one myself, and look forward to actually playing them "in the not too distant future!"
Look forward to seeing ya around compadre,

hey! personally I play the tyranids, but currently they are just about the worst army out there, but if you look at them and think "wow I really like what I see" GO FOR IT you liking what you see and and having fun playing them is more important than doing what is better! but if you're more interested in winning or you like the tau more, go with the tau they will win more than tyranids hands down.

I have just started Dark Eldar, they are apparently a bad army; but I wanted some god dam space pirates and I WILL HAVE MY DAM SPACE PIRATES!

Dark Eldar can be pretty fun IMO. I've had some decent victories with mine.
