So, I've been mentally playing around with an idea in my head about boarding shields and a bunch of disparate Legionnaires fighting together behind the shieldwall together. Essentially, an army largely based on Breacher squads or units with shields, and making it as effective as possible. I have no goals to use this at the current moment, but as a hypothetical list, it seems fun.

As such, I'm looking at a Shattered Legion which can still operate fluffily.

The Warlord would be an Imperial Fist Praetor, granting the Stone Gauntlet Rite of War, which is more or less the main reason of this build. He'd be accompanied by a bunch of Cataphractii terminators with Vigil Storm Shields, probably toting one himself. I'd probably want either Breachers or Phalanx Warders in here, as well as making the most of Vigil pattern Storm Shields on any Terminators.

Next, the other Legions to add: Ultramarines. Led by their Legion Champion with a Legatine Axe, I'd want Invictarus Suzerains and Breacher Squads making use of their cheap power swords.

I could leave it was this, but Iron Hands could be a fun prospect, based around Medusan Immortals with Volkite Chargers and led by a Praevian with Castellax, or some other Consul upgrade.
Alternatively, I could go for Salamanders, with plenty of Firedrakes and suchlike. However, I think Iron Hands fit in better with the theme, and Guilliman's Dauntless Few.

My plan would be to add in some Quad Mortars or Scorpius Whirlwinds to provide artillery support over the heads of the main shield wall, and Deredeo Dreadnoughts to provide skyfire and with the Atomatic Pavise to boost the Invuln save of the men around them, giving the majority of models at least a 5++ in the open, and the storm shield models a 2++, unless I'm mistaken? I'd want Apothecaries in as many units as possible, except the Immortals, who don't need it, so if things all went well, I'm using Space Marines with at least T5 3+/5++/5+++ in the open, and possibly better in other units.

So, does idea have merit? Is it seen as cheesy? Am I missing something stupid? What kind of units should I prioritise, especially in my Troops and Elites slots? I'd think having an even split of UM Breachers and Phalanx Warders, but open to other ideas.

That's just such a try at cheese.

And your are mistaken, the pavise caps at 3++, so you won't have 3++ storm shields. (that's something many would be Fist players need to concider)

If I was trying for cheese, I'd be bring quad phosphex mortars and other such like. On the cheese scale, this isn't too bad. Again, that's not my goal. I'm trying to create an army based around a shield wall. Hence, I'm bringing units with shields, thereby limiting my ranged attacks. Blast weapons will have a field day with this army, and it will be considerably slower, with no transports and hardened armour.

If you feel it needs nerfing, I will. But really, I'm trying to create a list where Breachers can stand in the open and not be instantly shredded by phosphex and the various large gums which would be present at the points this list would require.

And many thanks for the pavise point, capping out at 3++ is just fine by me.
