No, (unfortunately?) my Blood Angels haven't suddenly grown kilts. My local group is going to start a tournament, and I'm considering entering.
It'll use 'Highlander' rules, which pretty much means every unit is 0-1. So a maximum of 1 Tactical Squad, 1 Furioso Dreadnought ETC.
Normally I wouldn't think twice about telling a tournament to go stick itself, but at least this time there's no chance of being wiped turn 1 by a cheese list.
So, in considering whether I'd do any good I came up with this...
Sanguinary Priest
- Jump pack
- Bolt pistol
- Power sword
- Melta bombs
96
Jumps with the S.Guard
6 man Sanguinary Guard squad
- 6x Encarmine swords
- 6x Angelus boltguns
- Chapter banner
223
Uses the tanks for cover, and tear gak up. I've learnt that deepstriking just gives them an excuse to jerk off the entire time >.>
10 man Sternguard Veteran Squad
- 10x Combi-meltas
Drop Pod
355
Drop down, combat squad and melt something(s) I don't like.
Furioso Dreadnought
- Frag cannon
- Heavy flamer
- Magna grapple
Drop Pod
165
Drops down, shotguns something. Hopefully lives to do it again, and maybe even again!
6 man Death Company Squad
- Jump packs
- 4x Chainsword + bolt pistols
- 2x Power fist + boltguns
185
Charges and punches stuff. I envision them being more of tank hunting force than anything. Not really sure on them though, they were kind of an ''I've got 185pts left... what do I get?'' sort of thing.
Cassor the Damned
140
He's here because I need the elites spare, and the troops full. He'd mean I need to find a printer though if I want to use him. Which is a pain in the buttocks.
10 man Tactical Squad
- Heavy flamer
- Flamer
- Veteran sergeant
- Power sword
Rhino
- Dozer blade
- Storm bolter
235
Combat squad, 5 bolters go objective sitting, rest go burning and stabbing.
Drop Pod
35
Cassor goes here
Baal Predator
- Twinlinked Assault cannon(?)
- Heavy bolter sponsons
- Storm bolter
- Dozer blade
145
Dakka dakka!
Predator
- Twinlinked Lascannon
- Lascannon sponsons
- Overcharged engines
- Dozer blade
135
Long ranged tank and MC hunting. About the only proper ranged in my army
Vindicator
- Dozer blade
- Overcharged engines
135
Leaves large holes in the floor. And I ain't even gonna clean up after myself.
1849
How's that?

What do you think of the Death Company?
Is there anything better I could spend ~185pts on?

Well the Sanguinary Guard give them a run for their money
Especially with a Samguinary Priest.

That's not true at all. DC are too fragile. I think that in many circumstances, the libby dread is even scarier. Although it too is fragile. I think you DC loadout is fine for a highlander tournament.

A bit of a bump, I apologise.
But I can confirm at least some of my opposition will include Knights and/or biker spam, both White Scars and Eldar thus far.
And the real kicker, dedicated transports need one of each type (Rhino, Razorback, and Drop Pod) before I'm allowed to ignore the 0-1 on them. So same sort of deal as troops.
Which means this list just got turned upside down.
I'd loathe to pull out, but I don't really see a way forward where I can even pretend to keep up with the likes of Eldar bike spam.
Or maybe Eldar just left a bad taste in my mouth, in the recent Kill Team game nights I played my BA got off a single shot, and were wiped turn 3. Because balance.

They can't spam the bikes, though, right?

The rules say that once you've taken one of each troops choice, limits on troops are off.
So for example if a White Scars list takes 1 tactical squad and 1 scout squad, they can then take limitless bikes.
Same rule applies to transports with a highest AV of 12 or less, dedicated or otherwise. So for me, once I've taken 1 Razorback, 1 Rhino and 1 Drop Pod the 0-1 is removed. Which means unless I take a Razorback, I've got 2 Drop Pods too many.
I'd loathe to pull out, I only joined because the rules seemed like they might help.
But once I dug deeper it seems like it feths me over and leaves a lot of the other stuff remarkedly untouched. Hell by these rules I'm pretty sure all Knight lists would be legal.

Oh, I'd pull out right there. Feth them and their windriders.
There is no fix for miscosted units.

That's what Facebook's telling me too. Ah well, how many times do I have to learn that Tournaments are not my thing.

An ITC tournament at least, you know what you are getting. You know what they can bring and what you are up against. Highlander is a ham-fisted attempt to fix what can't be fixed by composition. Windriders are busted. BA have not busted units. End of story.

Highlander tourneys I've been to have had several dfft approaches, all dfft to what you stated. Either there's never a removal of the 0-1 limit, or you can take another ONE thing once every single thing in your codex has been taken. So the White Scars player could take a second bike unit once he also has a unit of Preds, Scouts, Whirlwinds, Chapter Master, etc etc. That makes spamming literally impossible because I can't think of a codex that you could fit one of every unit into an 1850 list. Maybe Skitarii. Or you can only take as many Troops as you have Heavys and Elites. So three bike units would require three Sternguard, three Stormtalons, and three Devastators. And I would just make a 0-1 limit on SHV/GC, so no Courts allowed. Sounds like the TO didn't really think through how easy it would be to get around his Highlander rule.

Yup, I initially thought you could take an extra troops after you them all.
For example the Scars could take 2 bikes if they also had 1 scouts and 1 tactcials, or 3 bikes if they had 2 scouts and 2 tacticals.
But nope.
They have however pinky sworn on the Emperors grace that it's strictly a friendly tournament. So I'm back in.
I admit I remain skeptical because 2/2 of my previous friendly tournaments weren't, 3/3 lists I've had a hint aboutbaren't and the recent kill team event we had, which didn't even award bragging rights saw an Eldar list so whiffy I only got off a single bolt round tbe entire game.
But, although I'm new to the group I'm loving it so far So I shall trust them and have created a new list.
Should I post it?
Also what would make tthe best proxy melee scouts? Mk.IV Ultramarines/Word Bearers on 32mm bases, Jump Pack Assault Marines, Kroot, Tau Pathfinders or Tau Firewarriors? All on 25mmbases. Automatically Appended Next Post: So here's that other list I developed. I want it to be fun, those brutal hand to hand is the aim. But at the same time it is a tournament obviously.
+ Baal Strike Force - 1850/1850 +
Sanguinary Priest
- Jump pack
- Power sword
- Bolt pistol
- Warlord
91
Joins the S.Guard, I figured he'd probably make a better warlord than the Chaplain, and at least a fluffier one. As if I recall the Librarius and Sanguinary Priesthood are joint second in command of the Blood Angels.
Chaplain
- Jump pack
105
Joins the Death Company.
10 man Tactical Squad
- Heavy flamer
- Flamer
- Veteran sergeant
- Power sword
180
Rhino
- Dozer blade
- Storm bolter
55
Combat squad into sarg, special, heavy and two, and 5 guy teams. 5 regular guys sit objectives and/or troll assault people. Fancy team goes stabbing and burning for a lark.
7 man Scout Squad
- Bolt pistol + combat blades
- Veteran sergeant
- Power sword
113
Runs up and stabs something. Do you think the 7-men make them more likely to get focused and killed than 5 men?
7 man Sanguinary Guard Squad
- 7 Encarmine swords
- Chapter banner
256
Jumps up using the tanks as cover, and rips apart hopefully some MeQ.
10man Death Company Squad
- 2x Boltguns + power fists
- 8x Bolt pistols + chainswords
- Jump packs
280
Pulls apart some weaker units as a result of their beautiful, deadly delusions.
10 man Sternguard Squad
- 10x Combi-meltas
320
Drop Pod
35
Drops in, combat squads. Melts 1-2 things I don't like. Statistically they should destroy a Knight reasonably comfortably if all 10 fire at it, 5 might get lucky and manage it.
Baal Predator
- Flamestorm cannon
- Heavy bolter sponsons
- Storm bolter
- Dozer blade
145
Quick marches up the table, and liberally burns stuff. Would heavy flamers be an idea? I know a lot of people like the assault cannon, but maybe it's just the psychology of slowely killing a few every turn with that vs cremating a tonne at once with the flame storm, I like cremation personally.
Predator
- Twin-linked lascannon
- Lascannon sponsons
- Dozer blade
- Overcharged engines
135
Hunts vehicles and MCs.
Vindicator
- Overcharged engines
- Dozer blade
135
Hunts large blobs of tough things.
What do we think? I've had to abandon my honoured Dreadnoughts I'm afraid as 2 Drop Pods is too much for Eldar bike spam to handle, but that's besides the point. The list seems to largely focus on the Sanguinary Guard and Death Company, but I'm not sure how I could avoid that.
