I've decided to play AoS instead of 40k because the rules are free, I can find out what every model does without spending $34+ on a codex, and i don't have to look at a chart and compare stats. I also like the models more.

But I'm kind of meh about the lore. The world seems very small to me thanks to 40ks scale. Make the world big to me, make the lore interesting. Make me care.

"Show me where it says that in the codex!" said Learchus.
"You know brother that I cannot." said Uriel.

Just go here and read the lore. https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/710601.page

Otherwise what I will say will just turn you off Age of Sigmar and I would hate to do that to anyone for this good game. Just say in the beginning it was horrible and now getting better. Read the link, it really can't be better explained than this.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

Yeah, dude. Search this section - there are several threads concerning general lore, book reviews, art pieces etc. and I'm sure atleast one of them is on sub-forum page one. Go educate yourself 'cause as you don't care about the lore I don't care enough to make you care.

That is an excellent read... as is this page, which gives a nice high level overview: https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Warhammer:_Age_of_Sigmar

For me the lore sells itself. The early stories are very "Fantasy Mad Max". I'm "shut up and take my money" at most stuff that has a post apocalyptic feel to it. And, in typical Grim Dark-esque fashion... every faction is full of misguided zombie like foot soldiers, who for the most part adhere to some hyper-religious vision.... even the Stormcast. They're brainless to a degree... or at least trapped in their station. That kind of vibe works for me in terms of a war game.

The other thing that draws me in is the implied vastness of the realms. It leaves itself open for pockets of narrative that you can outline separate from the larger arc. I play a bit of Frostgrave as well, and use a mix of AoS models and some random stuff from Reaper and other board games. I'm basically playing a version of Mordheim with Frostgrave rules and renegade units from their respective factions. But, that narrative core carries over into my AoS games as well.

That was harsh. Not sure if that was your intent or not.

I didn't want to sour his opinion on something I am not familiar with. While my experience with the Age of Sigmar fluff didn't go well, I stopped buying the books. I know so much has changed from so it wouldn't be fair to comment on something that I don't know currently. For all I know the fluff can still be horrible. Or it can be really great now. I will not comment on what I don't know though.

So I gave him a link where someone who does know.

If you know how the fluff is currently I would strongly recommend and let the original poster now. He is not asking what the lore is. He is asking if it's good and if so, explain to him why it's good.

*edit*

Remember for someone who is new to something, they don't know where to look, don't know what to expect so that is why we ask.

This is not at Core Commander but for everyone. Don't be harsh on anyone who is new and wants to learn and see how things are. After all he wants to know how Age of Sigmar is.

Agreed that was a bit harsh, CoreCommander. At least MrVulcanator is asking about the lore rather than just judging it from first appearances.

Back on topic, the setting is alot bigger than the previous Old World with 8 realms that have yet to be given a definite size (since they're made of the winds of magic their size could be anything from planet-like to endless expanses at the moment).

Though Sigmar's realm is the realm of Heavens and does include actual planets in it so you can get a little 40k flavor there but with portals to smaller worlds of magic instead of space ships and sci-fi(it does beg the question of whether the "space" is actual space or an void of aether. Would you suffocate or mutate if you were floating out there?). His realm can also be seen in the skies above all the realms as well which mirors both Asgard from Norse mythology and interestingly the Elder scrolls which doesn't have actual space but a magic dimension that mortal minds can't comprehend and thus "black outs".

The All-gates which has connections to the realms (including the realm of chaos). It was said it connected to other places as well before chaos had claimed it. (I believe the greenskins have it now)

There's also the gargants(giants) lore that mentions their arrival to the realms is a mystery and that they may have traveled from hidden worlds. I hope this is true because the Sky Titans need a break after being slaughtered by bloodthirsty monsters several times. (Ogres in the Old World and Khorne, himself at one point, in AoS.)

I'd also advise WellofEternity's blog of AoS artwork to see artwork of different lands and constructions in the mortal realms.

There's certainly alot for you to build on in the setting.

I'll be as brief as possible when defending my post. This is out of topic, could be skipped and is the last one from me in this thread.
Spoiler:
1. MrVulcanator has exhibited willingness to look through the 40k lore, as evident from his post history. Additionally he has bought atleast one 40k start collecting box and has considered others. He is not totally new and is familiar with the basics of gw wargaming - models, lore and hobby activities therefore I conclude that he could ask specific questions if he wished to.

2. His plea was essentially equivalent to "Make me like it." which is not a productive attitude concerning any future AoS endeavours. A general willingness to atleast make an effort to be engaged and ask something specific is definitely a better alternative and I'd like to think that my post history shows that I have provided, on more than one occasion, somewhat helpful answers. An inquiry in the spirit of "Tell me more about the anatomy of the realms" or "I like how Tzeentch models look, but I don't know anything interesting about them" is way better (not to mention respectful) than "Everything looks meh. Entertain me with all the interesting bits" .

3. I'm entitled by forum rules to post a reasonably polite and on topic answer(reasonably because mods can't deal with absolutes all the time and exceptions are made as long as the good spirit of the conversation is kept). I try to be helpful most of the time, but I am not entitled to be servile especially when the question is so broad, ill defined and lacks any evidence of engagement.

I won't be posting any more in this thread. indeed I should have kept up to my policy of not answering topics like this. This was my mistake and I will keep to myself in the future. I was intentionally being somewhat harsh so, if you must, feel free to report me to a mod for breach of Rule #1.

City of secrets is a good intro novel for this phase of the fluff in my opinion. As josh said it's a good pilot novel for this stage of fluff.

How the book is written I feel it's a good starting book that lends itself well to previous books.

This is what I hate. In a picture, they show it as a freeking space station. All sci fi, no fantasy element there at all.

Well, it's a pretty poor space station in that it lacks anything that'd keep the people seperated from space.

Though there's definitely a sci-fi vibe there but being how heavens magic revolves around stars, meteors and space it's a reasonable outcome(only other way i could see it is as a cloud covered Olympus ). It also resembles how Asgard gets depicted wrapped around Yggdrasil.

Anyway, with how the setting is you can completely ignore it for the more natural fantasy realms.

I won't get into AoS lore itself, but if you count the Old World as AoS lore, then there's PLENTY of lore and history to read up on and love. Other than that I agree w/
