I have just started playing Warhammer 40K, using digital means to test out armies before spending the $$$ on a real one.
Anyways i would like to try Orks out, my friend tells me they are not that good, I kind of want to prove him wrong, show him they are viable in casual play (as i assume most if not all armies are in casual play).
I have really gotten behind Nids and was going to try Necrons, I assume Orks play alot different from those though.
I have no idea where to start though. Looking for all help, what units stand out, what formations, what HQ choices are good, ect. I am using Battlescribe to build the army to help me keep my options and points in check.
So please help me prove my friend wrong and Orks are fun and viable in casual play. He claims to be a green skin but has never played Orks

Hi, orks are an extremely weak army for beginners but it can be average with some experience and good lists. Basically their best units are Warboss in megarmor/warbike, painboy on foot/warbike, gretichin, slugga & choppa boyz, meganobz, tankbustas, trukks, deffkoptas, warbikers, lootas lobbas. Other good units shoota boyz, KMKs, battlewagons, maybe traktor kannons if your meta is full of flyers.
As the entire army is extremely fragile orks work better in MSU, min expendable units, everything fast, no units on foot with the exception of long range shooters.
Typical orks lists at 1850 points have a lot of trukks, if you like to convert models you can scratch build them. Otherwise the new bundle boyz+trukk is quite good as it's a bit cheaper than buying the two boxes.

We play in a group of 5 who try and take best lists we can for what we have we a little proxying and my friend plays orks he's played 9 won 8 only lost once because he took the stupid ork Titan thing at 800pts
I also saw a tournament report on YouTube that orks won in a store so they are viable but won't win a major tournament but who cares, don't be disheartened a lot of people online always talk top end tourments but very few people actually play at that level.

I mean, willingly picking the bottom of the barrel army when you have a choice is not something I would normally recommend, but that being said I don't think you should ever pick an army based off their perceived competitive strength (unless you want to play in tournaments). You should always pick what you want to model and paint first and foremost. As long as your friends don't have riptide wings and 20 scatbikes then you should be fine.
I would definitely pick up a painboy. 45 points for FNP 5+. Definitely one of the best HQ choices for orks. edit: also great on a warbike, you'd have to convert that though

Painboy costs 50 points stock. It's also very easy to convert, you basically build a nob biker with all the ork warbikers bitz and just use one slugga from the nobz kit with a sort of spike (I cut a boss pole to have it) coming out from the tip to represent the urty syringe. To finish the conversion add some green stuff in his face to make the doctor's mask. Alternatively you can use some plasticard cylinders to make the urty syringe.

I enjoyed this. They're are a weak army for everyone. The player using it contributes to their success but the codex is extremely weak compared to other top codexes. Of course, I enjoy playing them, but they are far from anything - but weak.

There are several average armies that are not better than orks. You just have to take competitive orks lists and get a lot of experience. Of course 5-6 armies are way better, but orks are not among the worst if played correctly.
